It’s really beautiful, and that spiral quilting is perfect for it! I haven’t done much improv except some slash & insert, and even that was incredibly stressful. Like you, my engineering brain likes more precise measurements and more predictability in how it will end up looking.

Hi Liz! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only engineer that struggles with this!! I’ve done slashing before too and that to me I think is more prescriptive than some of the other improv I’ve seen. Hope you are doing well, only 3 more weeks till QuiltCon!!!

  2. Well, no engineering brain here. I love improv. I just take fabric and start sewing it together. No paper, no ruler, just plain fun. I find that it is much more freeing to me than the rules attached to traditional piecing. I like your blocks and the color combinations!

It’s times like these that I’m jealous of your non-engineering brain! I wish I could feel free, but it’s usually more anxiety-inducing! haha.

My favorite part is the lack of rules. I can turn my brain off for the most part. I’ve not paper pieced with improv though so this encourages me to try. I actually have two of Rayna’s books, I love her writing style!!

I’m such a rule follower that it causes me anxiety with the lack of rules!!! I guess I need to practice! haha. I need to look at the other books Rayna wrote because I love her style too!!!

You seemed to have tricked your engineering brain! Love the way it came out and the spiral effect and quilting.

Thanks Kathleen!!! I think it’ll just take practice for me to really not have any of that cringy feeling on the inside. 🙂
