Have you seen all the Jelly Roll Rugs pop up on Instagram lately? I kept seeing them in my feed and I apparently missed the sew along. I decided to make one anyway!
How cool does that look?! I LOVE it. So here's all the details and tips if you want to make one yourself. The pattern is from RomaQuilts, and you can pick it up on her Etsy shop. You will need 1 Jelly Roll, lots of batting strips, a Jeans sized needle
I picked out my Sunday Supper Jelly Roll by Sweetwater because of the great greens, blues, and yellows in the collection. My photos taken in my sewing room are all turning out a little funny tinted, and I actually ordered new daylight bulbs that will arrive today to hopefully fix this issue.
You end up sewing the entire jelly roll into one long strip. I chain piece while making my binding so I used that same method here. I almost didn't have enough table space for all the strips!
When I mentioned lots of batting strips, I meant a lot! You need the same length as the full Jelly Roll. It was a bit interesting to cut my 90" wide batting into strips. Make sure you have a sharp rotary cutter and be careful!
Making the rope ball was by far the longest part of the process. Make sure you use some wonder clips to help keep all the pieces together! Also, it took me WAY too long to figure out that I needed to use a pin to keep my ball from unraveling while making the rope. I made a little bit of the rope, added more to the ball, and then made more rope, repeat. The ball is so much larger than I thought from the other peoples' photos on Instagram. My flatter bottle and iron should give you a better reference on how big this thing is!
The most fun part was sewing the rope together to make the rug! The rug is also deceptively huge. This is a zoomed out photo of the rug in front of a normal inside house door!
This was so fun to make, I'm already thinking of which Jelly Roll I should use for the next one!
