There are so many phone applications out there these days that can do anything and everything, but sometimes it's much easier to just use your camera! Let me explain... I am working on my Frame It Up volume 2 quilt, and I already walked through my color placement process (read about it here). However when I start actually making the quilt top, I always want to check my color placement prior to sewing everything together. How annoying would it be if you sewed everything together and then realized you didn't like the color layout?!
Ta da! Mocked up quilt top! Using just my camera and some design boards. For comparison I did use the PhotoGrid app and the image below is what I mocked up from that. It took a little more time since I had more than the maximum of 15 photos, so I needed to make 2 photos, then add them together and crop it down to the right size. It does get rid of the white borders around each of the photos, so it's up to you on how you want to mock up your quilts before you sew them.

Here's the process:
Step 1: Make sure you have all your little bits and pieces created for the block. In this case, all my half square triangles and flying geese needed to be created.
Step 2: Have a large enough design board to hold the block layout without being sewn together. I made my own design boards with foam board
Step 3: Take a photo of your block making sure it's as square with the block as you can make it. Once you have your photo, crop the photo square around the block.
Step 4: Repeat until you have all the blocks photographed.
If you are using just the photo reel on your phone, you must take your photos in a specific order so the photos will be saved in the correct order. For my phone, I started at the bottom right block and worked from right to left, then from the bottom row up.
Step 5: Once you have all the blocks photographed in your photo reel, I screenshot my photo reel that had all of my photos! I cropped the screenshot down to the size of the quilt.
Using the PhotoGrid App, you can manipulate a collage to make the mock up as well.

Once I verified my color placement, I started sewing my blocks together! I was able to get lots of blocks together and placed them my larger free standing design wall. Only 4 more blocks to go! My freestanding design wall is full, so my last row of blocks may end up on the floor.
