Block 9 of Sew Let's QAL is released today! Read all the details of the QAL here. Don't forget to bookmark my quick links page for easy access to all of the designers' and hosts' blog posts! Block 9 is a quilt block designed by Kathleen of Kathleen McMusing! Block 9 is also the last block of Segment 2 so be sure to check out the Segment 2 recap blog post here! Remember that all patterns for the QAL will be free until September 24, 2019 (the end of the QAL).
Here are my top tips for constructing this block:
- This was a really fun block, but I definitely recommend starching your fabric to help contain the stretch of the fabric.
- I made the pieced version and I would say this is precision piecing, but if you are off it's okay!
- I also recommend a smaller stitch length for sewing the strips together.
- Here's what you'll see when you are cutting your strips down:
- When you are cutting the pieces for the edges of the center block, don't forget to square off the side!
- Do not pull on these strips, especially if you didn't shorten your stitch length. I was testing to see just how stretchy the strip turned out to be and the answer is A LOT (I didn't starch) and I busted a LOT of seams (hence the recommendation to shorten the stitch length!).
- Adding the inner borders, make sure you cut the pieces to size and then PIN! The single fabric strip will seem almost too short since the pieces will tend to stretch!
- Repeat this for both sides.
- Lastly, I've also been using Fabric Markers this QAL and decided to pick this block as my "Sew Let's QAL" block marker.
- Ta Da! All done!
