Block 10 of Sew Let's QAL is released today! Read all the details of the QAL here. Don't forget to bookmark my quick links page for easy access to all of the designers' and hosts' blog posts! Block 10 is designed by Laura Piland of Slice of Pi Quilts! The block features buttons! The way Laura has written the construction of the block is so clever! Remember that all patterns for the QAL will be free until September 24, 2019 (the end of the QAL).
Here are my top tips for constructing this block:
- I use Heat and Bond Lite for my raw edge applique adhesive. Double check and triple check that the folded center is located on the dot of the pattern. Otherwise, you will end up with bits of a circle rather than a complete circle.
- I use Karen Buckley scissors to cut my shapes out. The serrated edges make a nice crisp cut. Be sure to read the instructions on if you are cutting just the outside, or BOTH the outside and inside of the adhesive ring.
- For the smaller rings, make sure to pin in the middle of the template. I cut a slit in the ring to help cut the rings out. The slit won't be noticeable since you are ironing the adhesive to the fabric.
- You can see on the smaller rings the slit that I cut above. It will not impact the adhesive.
- Now the pattern has you use the back and front of fabric, which is great if you are not using solids or grunge. The front and back of my fabric look pretty much the same! PRO TIP: If you are using solids or fabric close to solids, use a different color for the ring! I had to remake all my button rings so that they would show up!
- I used my Fusamat to help align the large button on the background and not get the adhesive stuck to my ironing mat.
- I used a blanket stitch to stitch around all the raw edges of the buttons. Then I used my 12.5" square ruler to trim the block to size, adjusting where I wanted my edges. Make sure that the smaller button edges are at least 1/4" away from the edge!
- Ta Da! All done! I can't wait to see your buttons!
Remember, we are doing prizes by segment for this QAL rather than by each individual block. The current segment ends after Block 13 and the entry window will be open from 12am Eastern on July 16 to 11:59pm Eastern on September 9. There are 3 ways to enter, all of which require a photo of all finished blocks in the segment:
- If you are on Facebook: Join the Partners in Design, Where Friends and Fabric Meet Facebook Group, and post a photo of all the blocks in the segment to be entered to win.
- If you are on Instagram: Use the hashtag #SewLetsQAL on the photos of all the finished blocks in the segment to be entered to win.
- Each host will have a Linky Party on their last block of the segment for you to link up the photo of all finished blocks for that segment in order to be entered to win.
The prizes for this segment include:
- 4” Needlecraft Scissors from Omnigrid (a Prym Company)
