Artsy Fartsy Challenge (Friday Foto Fun #94)

This month's Island Batik Challenge is Artsy Fartsy!  The task is to use any fabric art/non-traditional quilting/sewing/thread painting technique using 3 Aurifil thread weights.  The fabrics, batting, and thread featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, and Aurifil!

I decided to use my New York Beauty block for my Artsy Fartsy piece.  You can check out my Tuesday post on how I constructed the block!  I decided to use Hobbs batting so that the parts that were unquilted would be extra poofy!

Here is the list of thread that I used:

I decided to use the center of the block like an improv sunflower.  Using the heaviest weight of thread from Aurifil (12wt), I quilted pebbles.  Then I used the 40wt in yellow to create the petals and painted the thread to create a solid color.  I continued to fill the spaces with the other colors to create a textured effect.

I used solid Island Batik black for the backing so the thread will really pop with the colors!

I really love how I decorated this mini quilt with thread! (Click on the photos to enlarge)

Be sure to follow the Island Batik Facebook page to see what the other ambassadors are making this month!

Have you thread painted before?  What did you think?
