Aurifil Artisan Challenge: Favorite Thread Weight

This month's Aurifil Artisan Challenge is to showcase our favorite thread weight!  Using the correct thread weight for your project is critical to get the finished results you desire.  Aurifil has multiple different thread weight offerings.  The smaller the number the thicker the thread.

My absolute go-to thread weight is a 50wt thread. The reason why I love this thread weight is because it's thick enough to be super strong, but thin enough to not cause my piecing to be skewed by creating too much thread in the seam.  In addition, I can quilt my quilts with 50wt and still get some amazing texture without my quilting being super visible. Best of all I can use 50wt to make bags.  The thread is strong enough to sew through many layers of fabric and interfacing without breaking.

I used my go-to 2024 thread to sew my McKensie bag this past weekend.  All the bags I've sewn with 50wt have held up nicely through wear and tear.  I expect no less from this bag.

I tend to forget to change colors while sewing bags and realize after the fact that a different color would have blended in better. Whoops!  But it still turned out great.

This bag has a magnetic closure but also has a lobster claw clasp to help secure the opening.

There are some nice little embellishments to the bottom of the bag to give some visible interest besides just a gusseted bottom.

This was also the first time that I used grommets for the bag handles.  It was scary cutting a big hole in the bag, but it turned out nicely!

Bag day is one of my favorite streams each month! Join me next month when I make another bag with my trusty Aurifil 50wt.  You can watch my stream on my Twitch channel.

Do you use Aurifil 50wt to create your bags?  If not, why?
