Well, this was an unbelieveable week. I've typed up, deleted, and retyped up what my thoughts are on what happened, but I think Sarah has said it best.
Before our week was derailed, I did make this fun Percival Laptop Bag last Saturday and Sunday on my Twitch channel! The bag took me about 10 hours to cut and sew all the different pieces. I made some mistakes along the way and went through a phase of really HATING this bag. Now that I'm reflecting upon the bag a few days later, I appreciate my efforts a lot more. The front of the bag has 2 separate zipper pockets.
The smaller of the two zippers is just a normal pocket whereas the larger zipper has a slip pocket and an even smaller zipper pocket inside for things like USB sticks etc.
The back of the bag is two large slip pockets. I made this out of Faux leather and it was the first time that I added a rivet at the seam to secure the division of the pockets.
The interior of the bag is pretty cool and also kind of a pain to sew! On one side you have a large slip pocket held together with magnetic snaps and 3 large gusseted pockets (left side of the bag in the photo). The other side is a pocket for your laptop that has some depth to it to account for the thickness of a laptop (right side of the bag in the photo).
Now, what did I think of the pattern?
- I am so glad I learned from the last time I used faux leather to only use it as accents. Otherwise, there would be spots in the bag that would be SUPER THICK.
- There is a lot of thick foam in places in the bag which makes it a bit awkward. I think my lining is too big for the bag, but in actuality, it may not be. The thickness of the foam in some places is 1/2" thick therefore causing the lining to shift awkwardly.
- I really hate drop-in linings. The construction is not bad but I definitely had issues with the drop-in lining since I had troubles maneuvering the bag under my needle to sew in the correct spots.
- I don't think this pattern is for beginners. It may be that I'm not used to RLR patterns, but there were some things in the pattern that were definitely confusing and took me a while to understand what she wanted me to do. If I made more of her patterns, it may be easier to comprehend. However, I'm not really looking forward to making her other patterns that I have. Maybe we'll try again in a few months.
- I'm glad I used fabrics that are cute my first time making the bag even though it's not perfect, it'll get loved and used.
