Did you know that not all triangle rulers are the same? Well, duh if I put it that way! As I was destashing my Tula Pink fabric, I was struggling destashing a half yard bundle of fabric from her De La Luna line. This fabric is one of my favorite lines of hers and I had to have that hard conversation with myself that I needed to cut it or sell it. I searched the web and found this really neat Spirited pattern by the Quilt Room. I didn't want to order the 2 Peak in 1 ruler, because obviously, I had to already have a ruler that cut the triangle shape that was needed.
I looked through all of my triangle rulers and determined that the Triangler and the Super Sidekick ruler were the closest to give me that shape. Note that the photos are taken from an angle to eliminate the glare.
I determined that the Triangler was too narrow for the ruler, but I definitely thought that the Super Sidekick ruler would work. Score! I don't need to buy a new ruler and wait for it to show up. Let's get started on this quilt...
Spoiler alert, the Super Sidekick gives you a triangle block that is not square but rather rectangular where unit is wider than it is tall. Cue the seam ripper as I stitched up about 16 of the triangle blocks before I noticed this. I had cut one entire colorway (4 blocks = 16 units), thankfully I did not do all 4 colorways just yet. I ended up using EQ8 and mocked up just the triangle block to print the templates to trimmed my oversized triangles to the correct size. Can you tell the difference between the two sizes of triangles? The left is the correct size needed and the right was cut with the Super Sidekick ruler. I also had to trim the side triangles as well for all of these units since they were also too big, but I didn't any photos of those.
I then proceeded to order my 2 Peaks in 1 ruler from Amazon and it arrived yesterday and maybe I can get back to finishing this amazing quilt top!
The moral of this story, check your triangles. They aren't all the same!
What are your sewing plans this weekend? On Saturday, I'll be streaming the finish of my Color Pop quilt (new pattern coming soon!) and then making a scrub cap for my cousin if there is enough time. I start at 8am Mountain time on my Twitch channel and will go till about noon. Come hang out, chat, and sew!
