My NYC Blog Hop (Friday Foto Fun #241)

Happy Friday!!!  Today is my stop on the My NYC Blog Hop!  My NYC is a new fabric line from Gotham Quilts!  I actually visited Gotham Quilts the last time I was in NYC (they were in the midst of moving to their current location).  It's a great shop and I highly recommend checking them out!  The fabric collection is super cute and has many iconic NYC images.

As I considered what I should make with this fabric, I thought about the New York Beauty block I made several years ago.  I decided to make a pillow this time with one New York Beauty block.  I used the New York Beauties & Flying Geese book by Carl Hentsch!  I remembered why I love this book because you can use bits and pieces of the different units to make your own block.  You can read about my first attempt at the New York Beauty block here.

Since I have an e-book version, I printed out the options for the different blocks and cut them out to see the combination I liked most.  I picked 4 blocks that did not have flying geese because the My NYC fabric had pretty large motifs that would have been lost in the tiny flying geese. Instead of making quarter circles at the center of each block, I decided to applique the center circle so I could accentuate the fabric.  I think it turned out great!

The block finished perfectly-sized for my feather pillows.  Pillow form hack - buy feather pillows at Ross and remove the cover to make your own!  I actually mostly free-motion quilted the pillow cover myself!  Only the very center of the pillow was completed computerized.  I realized that I do need to practice free motion as the more you practice the better you get!

If you noticed that my pillow does not have funky-looking corners, it's because I use a pillow trimmer that wedges the corners inwards to make the filled pillow look more square.  The cover is not square at all without a pillow form.  On the back, I used some of the leftover fabric and made a zipper enclosure down the middle.

If you are interested in the New York Beauties & Flying Geese book, you can buy the book directly from C&T Publishing on their website or on Amazon!  (affiliate links)
