#1 Aurifil Thread
This is my favorite type of thread to sew with. I use a 50wt to piece and quilt. I'm really not a colorful quilter so I own a lot of the plain white thread, color 2024! Call me boring, but it's my go-to. I have color boxes with other colors for applique or quilting in a different color.
#2 Karen Kay Buckley Scissors
These scissors are amazing! They come in 4 different sizes, but my favorite size are the ones with blue handles, 6" scissors. They are sharp till the very end of the cut, so convenient! You can also find deals on Massdrop for these scissors once in a while.
#3 Dritz Finger Presser
This little wooden tool is amazing. I have a few other finger pressers, but none of them work as well as this little finger presser. It's made ambidextrous, so anyone can pick one up and use them. I have to be careful with this one because it can easily get lost in my sewing room. This is a tool I wish I had more than one of.
#4 Sunflower Quilts Thread Cutter
I got this in the Sew Sampler box months ago and it wasn't until I went to a quilting retreat weekend where another one of the girls RAVED about this thread cutter that I actually tried it. I promptly came home and begrudgingly gave it a shot. It actually works, and it works well! I am a serial chain piecer, and this is a must have next to my machine! Another tool that sometimes get buried under the shuffle. Seriously, I should clean more!)
#5 Magic Pressing Mat
This mat is made up of all wool and makes pressing your pieces a breeze. The wool traps the heat so it's like you are ironing your seams from both sides. I have a normal sized one, but they also came out with a MEGA size. I would recommend getting the mega size because bigger is better as long as you have the space! Tip: Don't iron on your cutting mat, the heat will go through the wool and warp your mat. Ask me how I figured out that little lesson!? Whoops.
#6 Fons&Porter Design Wall
This might be my favorite item on this list! I just got 2 of these during Sewing Expo and have been using them since then. My entire wall in the spare bedroom has these hanging on them. It's definitely helped me get my projects off the floor and showcase what I'm working on. If my husband would let me, I'd take over more walls in the house with these design walls.
#7 Creative Grid Rulers
Hands down the best type of rulers out there. I started off with the Omnigrid rulers which are nice for beginning quilters. However if you want nice non-slip rulers, nothing really beats Creative Grids. All their rulers come with a non-slip backing. Also you can never have too many rulers. These little things definitely get lost in the shuffle. I think I have like three 4.5" square rulers, which is a bit ridiculous since 6.5" is totally a better size for me, but I digress.
#8 Olfa Rotary Cutter
I use the 45mm rotary cutter for everything. I have a few friends that swear by the 60mm, but I have yet to try that size. Also this is my favorite style since you have a way to lock the blade shut, and the blade is not exposed unless you are squeezing the handle. I have a really bad habit of leaving my other cutters with the blades exposed when I set them down. With this one there is no need to worry about that, just don't lock the blade in the exposed position!
#9 Quilting Books
You can never have enough quilting books! You can get books on improv, quilting, piecing, blocks, etc. There are so many of them out there! On the top of my wishlist this year is No Scrap Left Behind by Amanda Nyberg. I have all these scraps left, and I'm always amazed at Amanda's ability to make super scrappy amazing quilts. (Plus she's a fellow Minnesota quilter <3)
