January Color Challenge Revisited

January is almost over and the linkup for entering to win the January prize opens tomorrow on Pattern By Jen's blog! If you missed the kickoff of the challenge, you still have time to make something RED and enter!  Read about the January Challenge here.

I decided to make Jen from Dizzy Quilter's block as well with a slight modification.  I did not have the template her pattern suggested, so I used what I had.  You can download Jen's pattern from her blog here.

I used the Pixelated Circles template by Jessee Maloney that would yield a circle at the end, but a 14" block.  It looks like Jessee doesn't have any more of the templates left, but if you have a quarter circle template you can make this block too!  I measured so if I were to trim to the block down to a 12" block, the circle would still stay in tact!.

Because this pattern is paper pieced, I traced just the quarter circle and made sure to include the seam allowances so when I divided the circle into wedges all the wedges would be the same size.

Folding the wedge, I made sure to not include the seam allowances.  In order to get 4 wedges, fold the quarter circle in half and in half once more ignoring the seam allowances.

I repeated this 3 more times to get my full circle and then paper pieced my quarter circles.  If you've never paper pieced before, you can find my tutorial here.  If you have templates, always trim your paper piecing with templates rather than freehand cutting for more accurate shapes.

Repeat until you have all 4 of the quarter circles completed!

I used the outer part of the templates to cut my background pieces and I sewed everything together!  Knowing that my templates created a 14" block, I trimmed everything down with my 12.5" square ruler.

I have three 12" blocks for this month!  At the end of this year, I could have the potential to have 36 blocks to make a 72" square quilt (6 blocks by 6 blocks)!

Don't forget the link up opens tomorrow on Patterns by Jen's blog to win this month's prize!  One entry per person, and each month's entries get entered in for the grand prize at the end of the year! In case you forgot, this month's prize is a pack of Artisan Spirit Shimmer Strips sponsored by Northcott.  The strips are jelly roll style strips at 2.5" wide.

In case you missed the other bloggers who are participating in this challenge, check out their January projects and blocks! I can't wait to see what they are up to as well!
