I have been away on business all week, but that didn't stop me from being creative nor sewing my heart out last weekend! I finished up my secret sewing faster than I planned so I decided to open up my Longitude fat eighth bundle to start working on my twin sized version of Frame It Up. (Read about Frame It Up here)
The pattern has a secondary design when the blocks are together, so it's important to plan out how you want the colors to be placed on the quilt. The first thing I do when I look at using a collection for color placement is to sort by color and then by intensity.
Since this is a quilt that has 2 fat eighths per block, I start by laying out the colors by block placement in the quilt. I have the two sets: one for the inside of the block and one the outside of the block.
I think they look pretty good as I wanted that change in gradient to give the quilt some extra movement, so I decided to check with overlaying the two sets of layouts.
If you physically cringed at the photo, you had the same reaction as I did. My grandiose plan of gradients moving in opposite directions is pretty awful. I decided then to rework the grids with the gradient of color moving together.
What do you think about this color placement? I think it's so much better! I set off to work and cut all the fabric and started sewing. I left the house with a huge stack of half square triangles that need to be trimmed and a stack of finished flying geese! But sadly I forgot to take a photo to share, whoops!
