Happy Galentine’s Day!

Galentine's Day is a holiday that started on the Park and Rec TV show that falls on February 13, the day before Valentine's Day each year.  The idea of the holiday is for ladies to celebrate ladies! This is the theme for our first project for the Island Batik Ambassador Program this year.  Did you catch my unboxing last Friday on my Facebook live video?  If not, check it out below.

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.

I decided to make Heart Block mug rugs for my Galentine's Day project, because I LOVE all my best lady friends!  I went a little overboard and ended up with 4 different mug rugs.  Two of the mug rugs are plain hearts but used different construction assemblies.  I am going to give a tutorial on how to make one of them.  The other two fancier LOVE rugs were my original idea, however the pieces ended up TINY!  If there is enough interest in the LOVE rugs (comment below or email me), I will write a pattern.  Otherwise, they are just for your viewing pleasure.

Finished Size: 8" square

Fabric Requirements Cutting Instructions:
Heart Fabric:
2 - 7.5"x4.5"

Background Fabric:
2 - 4.5" squares
4 - 1.5" squares
2 - 1"x8.5"

Backing Fabric:
10" square

Batting:
10" square

Assembly Instructions:

On all of the Background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.

The placement of the squares are shown above.  Make note the direction of the drawn lines.  Sew on each of the drawn lines and trim 1/4" away.

The excess triangles trimmed on the bottom can be sewn together for 2 bonus Half Square Triangles (HST).  Make sure to press all of your seams OPEN to reduce bulk.

Sew the two heart pieces together and add the background rectangle to the top and bottom of the heart.

Here is a look at all 4 of my hearts during construction.  Notice all the little seams on the back of the love hearts.  The MVP tool I used to create these block was this Dritz Finger Presser Tool!  It really helped me press the tiny seams open prior to the iron.

Remember those bonus HSTs from trimming?  Well because I had made 4 mug rugs, I had 8 bonus HSTs that I made into pinwheels!  I used these for 2 of the mug rug's backing.

Simple straightline quilting on all 4 mug rugs with Aurifil 50 Wt in White and machine binding to finish them off!  If you need help joining the ends of your binding, check out my tutorial here.

Hope everyone has a fantastic Galentine's Day!
