Mini Quilt Challenge!

This month's Island Batik Challenge was Mini Quilts!  The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.  Mini quilts are quilts that are smaller than 24" square.  Mini quilts are some of my absolute favorites to make because they come together super quick and give me a great sense of accomplishment! My favorite types of minis are barn quilt blocks.  I even wrote a tutorial a few months ago on one of my favorite barn quilts (read about that here).  I utilized this challenge to create a block I had found on Pinterest but had never seen a quilt pattern for.

Please note: I couldn't find the original designer for this barn quilt block as the page it was pinned from was taken down. Click the photo to go to the Pinterest pin.

A couple things to note about my process for making this block.

First step was to make all the bits for the block, I shared this sneak peek on Friday's post!  Then I placed the layout starting from the inside out.

The center looks a lot like the center I used for my Spinning Vector quilt.  I used partial seams to sew all the bits together.  If you don't know what partial seams are, you can read my tutorial here.

Once I got the block sewn together, I realized it ended up about 14" and I wanted my mini to be larger. So I decided to add a border and reuse the bonus Half Square Triangles (HST) from the flying geese.  Using my phone camera, I tried all 4 combinations of the border and HSTs before making my final choice.

I pick the bottom left layout and finished sewing my quilt top together.

Using the Hobbs 80/20 cotton batting and Aurifil 50wt 2024 White thread from my Island Batik Ambassor box, I did a combination of walking foot and free motion quilting.  The quilt finished at 20" square.  This is one of my favorite mini quilts that I've ever made!

Do you love minis?  What is your favorite type of mini?
