Week 9 of the 365 Days Of Art Challenge! I can't believe it's already Week 9, where is the time going?! If you haven't started yet, no worries! The link up at the bottom of the post will be open all year so be sure to check back to see what other fellow creatives have made with this week's exercises. Read more about the challenge here.
Without further ado, here are my 7 for this week… the good, bad, and ugly!
#57 Color in the concentric circles. Consider what mood these colors might represent. I used my 24 pack of colored pencils for this exercise and I feel like I didn't have enough colors to make my circles follow much of a gradient. For example, the blues are all very different from each other and the circles don't seem to flow well. I tried to do some fancy scripting to write the moods, but I remembered why I never really liked my own cursive writing. P.S. I am in the camp that schools should still teach cursive writing, but I don't have an articulate justification to share.
#58 Design a T-shirt. This is a bigger version of an exercise that we have already done. I started out with the the pink and green triangles. I wasn't completely sure what design I was going for, but there ended up being a gap in the middle. Adding a fluffy sash was apparently my solution. I want to reinforce my statement that I should not design t-shirts!
#59 Fill a page with things that are the color yellow. Some of the items were already drawn for us. I drew the star, pencil, and school bus before I decided I needed to Google "things that are yellow." How did I forget that a banana is yellow?! I also added a rubber ducky, a sunflower, and a ear of corn. Yes, that yellow tree looking thing is supposed to be corn.
#60 Color in the dots. Using one color at a time I filled in the dots at random. I think the colors looks a lot brighter and vibrant with the black background. Only the dark blue and dark green are harder to see.
#61 Calligraphy practice. I used my brush pens for this exercise. I think I got much better by the end of the page! The first couple I was overthinking the top of the stroke trying to get the thin start.
#62 Color in the waves. Remembering the issue that I had with blue colored pencils earlier in the week, I fished out my 48 colored pencils set that had 5 different blues instead of 3. With the addition of other blues, I feel that the change in colors between the waves is less harsh and the waves are more continuous.
#63 Fill the right side of the page with textures and markings. Try using paints with both wet and dry brushes. This was more fun than I thought it would be. I used watercolor for this exercise making a blob of purple before taking a dry brush and creating texture! I can just imagine how flowers would look creating them in this method. I even tried making a leaf at the top of the page. Using some of the other prompts in this book, like adding detail to a drawing with pens, could really make these texture marks shine.
A few notes now that we are 9 weeks in:
- A few weeks ago, it seemed like it was a chore to do these exercises and making myself blog about each one was my motivation to actually get them done.
- It wasn't until the Quilting as a Layer of Design class that I took during QuiltCon that made it apparent to me that working through these exercises each week has helped my creativity hurdle. (read my recap here)
- I really do believe that creativity is a muscle and you just need to get into a regular habit of using it.
Now that we've all had a good chuckle and/or grimace, I encourage you to join in the fun and expand your creative horizons too!
