Always Be Prepared! (Friday Foto Fun #23)
I spent this week in Kansas on a business trip, and I'm finally going home today!! I brought my Janome Jem Gold so I could sew from the hotel room at night. It's not the best setup, but it works ok. I pre-cut all my fabric before the trip to prep it to be sewn, and I use the hotel iron and ironing board.
I've done this multiple times in the past and even bought my Janome specifically to travel with. However this trip, the ironing board was terrible for pressing my pieces! I don't know why but it was very difficult to get blocks flat. In the end, I didn't get as much sewing done as I planned.
I came prepared with other items such as hand embroidery! I belong to the Cozy Blue Stitch Club and get one brand new (not yet released) pattern printed on fabric and enough floss to complete the pattern each month. At the beginning of March, I got Night Garden, and I LOVE it so much. I knew I needed to finish my Floral Mandala pattern that I had started over the Christmas holiday before I started a new one. Because I couldn't really sew a ton in the hotel room, I ended up doing a lot of hand embroidery!
I finally finished the Floral Mandala (above) pattern!! Isn't it beautiful? You can pick up a kit from Cozy Blue Handmade. I was so in love with Night Garden that I started and finished it this week as well.
I think this is one of my favorite patterns! It will be released in a few months for purchase!
I use these awesome Plastic No-Slip Hoop (affiliate link) for my embroidery. They keep my fabric nice and taut.
I am on the road each week for the next several weeks for work, so I need to capitalize my time on the weekends to complete my projects. I hope everyone has an amazing and productive weekend!
Available time for quilting this next week:

Glad you found something fun to do during your trip! It looks really pretty, what are your plans for the finished embroidery pieces? I have a vacation coming up in the summer that I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do without my sewing or quilting machine for almost 2 weeks. Some English Paper Piecing, maybe!
I end up putting the embroidery in some decorative hoops and hang them around my craft areas… I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do once I have A LOT of them. I bring EPP and embroidery on my trips. Have fun on your trip!
Hi Sherry,
That looks like a pretty darn good setup for sewing in your hotel room. Sorry about the crappy ironing board – it probably doesn’t get much use by anyone else! Your handwork looks beautiful. I am surprised you find the lighting good enough for that in a hotel room, but then you probably have an extra light with you that helps a lot. ~smile~ Roseanne
I love having quilty things to do on trips too! Where were you in KS? We live in MO, but I have family all throughout KS. Would be fun to meet up sometime!!
What a great idea!
Those embroidery pieces are lovely! I especially love Night Garden and may watch for it in her shop. I am now considering getting myself a subscription, her patterns are lovely! I don’t know that I need more projects, though I do enjoy embroidery. In response to Liz, above, about lighting: I have a headlamp originally bought for camping that I keep in my bag with my embroidery project. It’s great for when I’m doing embroidery or hand stitching on the couch.
Your embroidery projects are beautiful!
Just love those embroidery pieces – something to remember for the future…althougth I have plenty of handwork to get back to (3 quilts, some wool, etc). They are really the most gorgeous things. What do you plan on doing with them?
I too like to take projects to sew in the hotel at night on business trips. Sometimes it involves bringing a ton of stuff, but it is worth it. I am actually doing a training this week and have been debating what to bring. I think I have decided on hand work and fabric to cut out a new quilt so I won’t have to haul my machine.
Your embroidery work is gorgeous! I bet you are so glad you brought it.
