Fall Into A QAL Block 1!

Today's the day! Block 1 is released, and I am so excited to share my version of this week's block.  Vanda Chittenden is the designer of this week's Hedgehog Block.  Check out her blog post for the tutorial and the pattern of the block.

I appliqued this block with the raw edge applique technique.  My block is made of all Moda Grunge fabrics.  I decided on this cute mulberry purple color for the main color of my hedgehog.

I used Heat and Bond Lite for my fusible adhesive.  You will want to trace the different applique pieces on the paper side of the fusible.  I like to nest my pieces to keep my applique shapes nice and pliable by only having adhesive on the outer edges of the pieces.

Next cut out each of the shapes and iron these on the wrong side of each of the fabrics.  Then, I cut on the line to make all of my shapes. I find that the Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Scissors are the best due to the serrated edges.

I used an oversized background square to help account for any skew during the applique process.  The next step is to lay out the entire block before ironing on the pieces, so you can play with the exact layout.  Once you have your layout, iron the pieces on using the manufacturer's instructions.  Secure the edges of the applique pieces using a blanket stitch.  If you do not have a blanket stitch on your machine, a simple zig zag or straight stitch on the edge will be just fine.

Once everything is stitched down, use your 12.5" square ruler to trim up the block!

Ta Da!  You are now done!  Block 1 down!

Don't forget to submit your completed block on Vanda's linky party, the Facebook Group Page, and/or on Instagram with #FallIntoAQAL to be entered into this week's prizes!  One lucky person will win a PDF pattern by Vanda Chittenden and 4 half yard cuts of Boundless fabric from Craftsy.

The prize entry window starting from 12AM Eastern on May 15, 2018 until 11:59PM Eastern on May 28, 2018.

As a reminder, I have a quick links page to catch up on the blocks in this QAL and my associated blog posts.  You can also get to that page by clicking the Fall Into A QAL button on the right sidebar.

The sponsors for the grand prize have also been announced. In order to be eligible for the grand prize, you must make a quilt top using all twelve of the QAL blocks by November 13th, 2018. Please note that all patterns are only free until the end of the QAL.

Happy Sewing! I can't wait to see your blocks!
