Week 39 of the 365 Days Of Art Challenge! Or as I like the call it... the week I did a lot of poor watercoloring! The link up at the bottom of the post will be open all year so be sure to check back to see what other fellow creatives have made with this week's exercises. Read more about the challenge and catch up on all the previous weeks!
Without further ado, here are my 7 for this week… the good, bad, and ugly!
#267 Fill the harbor with boats. I apparently do not know how to draw anything but a sailboat. Since the background looked like watercolor, I decided to watercolor my boats. All of the Instagram videos that I watch of watercoloring, people use hairdryers to dry their art. Note to self: try a hairdryer when using watercolor paper, the paper in this book was really slick and the hairdryer just blew colored water all over where I didn't want it to go!
#268 The rule of thirds is a handy trick used to help compositions to look visually attractive. Here, the page is divided into thirds. Create a drawing using these sections as a guide, placing elements into some of the thirds perhaps one or two thirds, rather than in the center. I am not sure if this is what the exercise was supposed to be, but I really tried to not draw anything in the center square. I was trying to draw the view behind our house with the walking path and bench. I added the trees on the lower thirds below the walking path because I felt like the drawing was very unbalanced!
#269 Today, try drawing with a line and wash. Use a fineliner pen or a sharp pencil to draw something. Then, add color and tone to your drawing using a watercolor wash. It's getting cooler outside, why not draw a Christmas tree! I used several different shades of green to make the tree have more depth, I think it turned out alright.
#270 Fill the page with the pattern. This exercise I distinctly remember seeing Lorna post a video about on her Instagram before the book was released. I really love this pattern and exercise a lot, maybe it's because I love the colors. I definitely want to make a quilt with this!
#271 Find an image of your favorite piece of artwork. Create your own version of it. This may not look like much but it's a (poor) rendition of the artwork that I bought from Nathalie Van several years ago. This is what the original looks like.
I actually need to find the place in our new house to hang this artwork back up.
#272 When drawing outside, or on location, you don't need to draw everything you see in front of you. Instead, you could try just drawing the areas that interest you the most. In this drawing, I enjoyed looking at all the features on the rooftops. I decided to draw my deck railing and deck floor. Not the most interesting thing, but you can kind of see my trees behind the deck railing that I drew too.
#273 Draw an urban landscape. Perhaps pick something you wouldn't usually choose to draw. I decided a bridge and I used a photo rather than look at it in person because this is supposed to be the Big 4 pedestrian bridge in Louisville... with horrible perspectives. Welp, better luck next time!
Now that we've all had a good chuckle and/or grimace, I encourage you to join in the fun and expand your creative horizons too!
