Whimsical and Wonky Challenge Part 1 (Friday Foto Fun #62)

This month's Island Batik Challenge is to create a quilt that is Whimsical and Wonky.  I decided to split my post into two parts due to the holidays, and I haven't quite finished the quilt yet.  The fabrics featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.  In celebration of the end of the 2018 Monthly Color Challenge tomorrow (the setting instructions are released tomorrow), I decided to do some improv curves!  I've been doing Dizzy Quilter's circle play blocks for the color challenge this past year.

I picked out the Paisley Dot layer cake/10" stacker and cut an additional 21 - 10"x10" squares of Sprinkles fabric for the background.  This particular layer cake has 42 pieces, 2 of each fabric.  With one colored fabric square and one background square both right sides up, I cut a curve to my liking.

I very carefully sewed the pieces back together on the curve. The ends will not match up because the curve that was cut did not account for the seam allowances, so it's okay that the pieces are a little wonky!  I used my 8.5" square ruler to make the block.

I repeated this process with the rest of the squares and ended up with 42 squares for my quilt.  My first thought would be to make a 6 block by 7 block quilt to use all the blocks.  However, it just made the pattern seem cut off.

I wanted to get some inspiration from Pinterest and looked at Drunkard's Path quilts.  I decided to make the quilt 6 blocks by 6 blocks instead and will use my extra blocks for the back of the quilt.

My husband is also an engineer and definitely did NOT like this quilt.  It's actually hard for me to do intentionally wonky quilts because I like things to line up.  After he helped me place the blocks in the layout you see above, he asked if he could go so he didn't have to look at this non-square non-lining up quilt anymore! I can say I'm pretty proud of what I've come up with so far, I think it fits the theme perfectly.
