Christmas RAPPing Blog Hop (+Giveaway)! (Friday Foto Fun #82)
Merry Christmas in May! Welcome to my stop in the Christmas RAPPing blog hop, that's all about Reverse Applique and Paper Piecing. Nan Baker and Margaret Brewster Willingham wrote this fun Christmas themed book!
I decided to make the Radiant Wreath wall hanging. The entire wreath is reverse appliqued which means instead of cutting out the shape and appliquing it to the background, you cut away the background so the color shows through. The printed version of the book will have a full-sized copy of the wreath to trace, but since I was working off a PDF I had to tape my pieces together.
Once I traced the design to my adhesive, I ironed the adhesive to the back of the white fabric and cut away the shapes. Then I ironed it to green fabric to create the wreath! It's a pretty neat process and definitely more precise on placement than traditional applique. I waited to get the entire quilt finished before I zigzag-ed the raw edges, so I counted the zigzag as part of my quilting.
Around the center wreath, there is a keyboard of red, white, and green of different strips and the corners are paper pieced stars with an applique center.
The finished quilt looks so fabulous and I can't wait to hang it up this winter! I opted not to put a bow on my wreath just yet because this quilt is going to be folded for storage. The pattern has instructions on how to create a fabric bow for the wall hanging.

This type of reverse applique is new to me. I learned the old way, I like this new way much better. Did the book offer a wreath version with red berries? Does it talk about using more than 2 colors (top + bottom fabrics)? What did you do to keep the;e green from showing through the white?

That’s a great question about how I kept the green from showing through. The green fabric behind the white is exactly the same size!
The book unfortunately did not include berries, but that would be easy for you to add as traditional applique. I do not recall if there were two or more colors for reverse applique.
What a pretty quilt! I’ve not done reverse applique, but I’ve wondered if I would find it easier than regular applique. Nice job, Sherry!

Hi Sherry, what a lovely quilt, and a great idea to wait and stitch the reverse appliqué as part of the quilting process. I’ve only done reverse appliqué using needle turn stitching….what a lot of work. This book sounds really good. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Interesting technique – beautiful quilt. Inspiring me to get started on my Christmas projects earlier than my usual “oh no it’s Thanksgiving already….” LOL
OK. A little lost here. Love your wreath. The applique is beautiful. For the rafflecopter question, I start sewing for Christmas when the “mood” strikes! This could be January when I think (sure wish I had made that) or in December when I think (so and so certainly needs a ….) or anytime in between.

As soon as I find what I want to make
I usually start planning, buying fabric and sewing my holiday projects early Summer. I make about 50 pillowcases and a number of fleece blankets so I try to get fabrics on sale and cannot wait last minute. I really am interested in trying more applique along my quilting journey.
I usually start Christmas projects in November. Last year was the first time I wasn’t sewing on December 24.

My mind starts the project around Feb/April. so the spirit is willing. You know how the rest goes! I have been know to finish the project the next year, (or so). lol I like this way of doing the reverse applique. I just saw it done at a quilt show earlier today, but they had finished their cut edges with an outline stitch. It looked like they may have stuffed the shapes a little, too.
It turned out great. It’s been fun seeing all the projects.
Awesome job!! Love it!! I have a few small Christmas projects started, but need to get busy on few more :/ I always try to start sooner…but usually end up cramming to finish close to last minute…sigh
