I've been sewing for me lately, working on a few projects that have been on my personal list for a long time. I bought some really beautiful Vera Bradley fabric by the yard at Quiltcon this past February. I decided to turn it into an Ultimate Travel Bag. The construction was similar to the Duffle Bag I made a few weeks ago. I think it turned out splendid!
I used my longarm to quilt an edge-to-edge pattern on the exterior, foam, and lining fabrics. I think this gives the bag a very professional quilted look!
This was also one of the first times I used mesh on the inside as pockets. It wasn't hard to sew, especially if you put the mesh fabric on top of what you were sewing it to. I just happened to have some purple mesh to match the fabric. One side had slip pockets made of mesh and the other was a zipper mesh pocket.
I think the bag turned out great! I am so ready to travel again after this virus passes by, but I don't think that will be anytime soon, unfortunately.
My thoughts on this pattern:
- It has a very similar construction to the Duffle bag, however, I think the Duffle Bag instructions were better.
- I broke 2 needles on the thickness of sewing everything together. Yes, TWO! You really need a machine that can sew through lots and lots of layers.
- It's smaller than the Duffle but it's still a good size for a weekender bag or just as a carry-on.
I didn't stream last weekend and I'm not sure that I will be streaming this weekend yet. I have been trying to take some "off" time for myself and hopefully, I'll be back streaming regularly on the weekends soon. I hope you are taking time for yourself as well.
What are your plans for this weekend? Sewing anything fun?
