I picked out lots of grunge to make this block! I opted to make a black sandy beach since those are my favorite!
Here are my top tips:
For the applique portion, I used Lite Steam a Seam 2 and a pencil. Trace the templates onto the paper side of the Lite Steam a Seam 2. Then iron to the BACK of the desired fabric. To save on fusible, nest the pieces so that it has fusible only on the edges of the shapes!
I use a Fusamat to iron all the pieces together after I cut them out. The Fusamat allows me to iron the pieces without the adhesive getting stuck. Once ironed, I can peel all the applique off together as one piece.
The background of the block uses a diagonal seam between the water and sand. It's okay if the block isn't entirely square because we'll trim the block after stitching the applique on. Once you've finished both of the turtles, you can iron them to the background. The bottom turtle goes off the block so make sure to protect your ironing board from the adhesive of the turtle hanging off the edge.
I used Aurifil monofilament thread with white thread in the bobbin to zigzag stitch the applique in place. The monofilament thread helps me to not need to change thread colors! This is more of a time saver when there are multiple applique pieces of different colors. Then trim the blocks to 12.5" square.
Ta Da! All finished!

I haven’t tried the Aurifil monofilament, I usually use Monopoly by Superior. Gonna look for it next time I’m out shopping.
