Longarming Mini Series – My Favorite Batting

For as long as I've been blogging, I haven't ever talked about batting, much less my favorite batting.  When I started quilting, I picked up all sorts of different batting from Hancock Fabrics (RIP), Joanns, SR Harris, etc.  I didn't really understand the differences between poly, cotton, wool, etc. I'm not going to go into the specifics of each type today, but I will tell you what I'm looking for in my quilts.

I love warm quilts.  Living in Minnesota, I'm always cold.  There were times in the past when I had to put on several quilts to be warm.  In my opinion, that's ridiculous and it means that the batting used in those quilts wasn't warm enough.  I also like quilts to be a little bit poofier... or have a higher loft.  Historically wool and polyester are warmer and have a higher loft, but I am partial to having cotton batting.  So I ended up trying Warm & Plush from the Warm Company. The batting is 100% cotton, it's got a higher loft, and most importantly the quilt is WARM!

The very first time I used the batting for longarming... I really disliked the batting. I wasn't able to pull and tug the batting to adjust it as I could with the Warm & Natural/White batting and it was frustrating.  However, once I got to use the quilts that had Warm & Plush, I was sold.  The quilts with Warm & Plush are my absolute favorites, perfect poof and warmth without being overly warm during the summertime on the couch.   I've been using Warm & Plush exclusively on my own quilts for the last several years now and longarming with the batting is a breeze.  I no longer run into the issues that I've had with it in the past!

The quilt that I'm sharing today is the finished Lucky Stars BOM quilt.  You can see the quilting texture on the quilt because of the loftiness of the batting.  If I were using a normal cotton batting, the texture would not be as noticeable in the photos.

In celebration of getting the Lucky Stars BOM from the Quilt Along finally complete, enjoy 25% off the PDF pattern from my Payhip shop until the end of the month with coupon code FINALLYFINISHED.
