Wizardry Getaway Recap! (Friday Foto Fun #247)

Where to start... last weekend I went to an AMAZING sewing retreat in Quitman, TX! The lovely ladies of Wizardry Stitchery & Crafts put on a 3.5 day retreat at the Stitchin' Heaven Retreat center.

Let's start with the location:

  • Approximately 2 hours east of Dallas, I could go home and see my parents and borrow a car.
  • The retreat center has 12 double occupancy bedrooms, a large sewing center, and a kitchen area.
  • There is also a row of cabins outside of the retreat center that sleeps up to 4 each.
  • Stitchin' Heaven Quilt shop is in a separate building sharing the parking lot with the retreat center.

There were a total of 36 (I think) attendees, several staff members, and teachers all living and hanging out in this space.   The sewing space was pretty big and comfortable with the number of attendees.  Unfortunately, I missed the Thursday night activities because of flight delays, but I did make it in super late that night.  All the attendees got a super cute sewing machine cookie with our name on it.  The retreat was all-inclusive so we had some amazing food cooked on-site at the retreat!  No need to go look for food outside of the retreat center.  I ended up renting a machine (Bernina 435) versus figuring out how to fly with my Juki.  It was a little hard to figure out how to sew bags on the Bernina, but I think by the end I finally figured it out while simultaneously missing my Juki.

Friday and Saturday were bag classes.  I'll do separate posts with each of the different patterns that we were able to sew.  All of the pieces were precut and interfaced for us to get down and sew immediately!  Even with the pieces prepped and ready to go, it was SO HARD to get all 4 bags finished.  It was like marathon-level sprint sewing on all the different bags!  Don't I look stylish with all my bags?

Some of the fun things about the retreat were the special shirts we made with the heat press... it's so cute and I know this shirt will remind me of this amazing retreat.

I know I didn't take a ton of photos, but it was incredible.  Watch this wonderful Instagram story from Lindsay (LindsHandmade) about the retreat. I made some awesome friends, made some great bags, and honestly had a refreshing & exhausting weekend sewing. I can't wait until the next one!

What are your favorite sewing getaway retreats?

I'm headed to India later today and will be gone all next week and weekend, so no streams until October 1!  See you on Twitch then!

Retreats are fun, but I haven’t been on one in a couple decades, or close to it. I enjoyed reading about your experience and seeing your photographs! I’ve always wanted to go to one of Quilter’s Heaven’s retreats. They always sound so awesome.
