February Color Challenge Block!
Happy February! This month's color is BLUE! If you want more details on the challenge read about it here.
Jen from Patterns by Jen designed a block that can be made in 6" and 12" finished. I opted to make all the blocks 12" to match the blocks I designed. You can get Jen's block pattern from her blog here.
The goal of the challenge is to have an entire block or project made from that month's color.
So I am designing a sample block each month for this challenge. My block this month is all about flying geese! The instructions are written for the traditional way of making flying geese. If you are looking to make the no waste flying geese, you can find my tutorial in the Barn Quilt Block Tutorial here. At the end of the year I'll give setting instructions for a 12 block and a 24 block quilt. There is a possibility of a 36 block quilt too!
Here's what this block would look like if used repeated in a quilt! I love the secondary design that occurs with the corners of the block.
Remember that to be entered in the giveaway this month, you will need to post your block or project on Jen's blog during the last week of the month. No need to worry, I'll be posting a reminder to link up closer to that time. The giveaway this month is a $25 gift certificate to Fat Quarter Shop!
Don't forget to check out the other bloggers who are participating in this challenge to check out their projects and blocks! I can't wait to see what they are up to as well!

So very pretty! Do you do a different single color every month, or do you have to mix / match at some point? That’s when it becomes super hard (for me, at least!) I love that big quilt you designed with all the secondary designs when the geese lines up at the corners. Very nice!
Thanks Liz. The challenge is a color based on so each month has been assigned a specific color! The only month that is a mix and match is December which is white/black. Definitely super challenging to get a single color, but it’s forcing me to work with different intensities of the same color. I’m interested to see how the full quilt is going to turn out with all the blocks being in essence one color 🙂
Love your fabric choices! And your block is very cool. I like the layout option.
Thanks Jen! I like seeing the blocks repeated in a layout option… it was one of the things that I actually forgot to do for January, oops! >_<
I love flying geese. What a wonderful pattern. Thank you for the inspiration.
Thanks Julie!!! Flying geese are one of my favorites, too! I hope you are joining the challenge this month!
Such a pretty block. I love flying geese, so this is right up my ally. 🙂
Thanks Jen! Flying geese are one of my favorites, too! This is shaping up to be a great challenge!
Great block! I love the quilt too with its secondary pattern- could make an appearance in another upcoming challenge ;). You are doing so much – be proud of what you are accomplishing!
I need coffee this morning! I read upcoming challenge… what upcoming challenge?! It took me a bit to catch up! haha I love secondary patterns and definitely one of the things I design a lot of <3 And thank you for reminding me to be proud of what I'm accomplishing, sometimes I get all caught up in feeling like I'm not doing enough!
Another lovely block this month, and I do like the repeated layout. Blue is such a nice colour to work with if you have to choose only one.
I love blue! Funny quirk of mine, I actually mock up all of my quilt patterns in blue first before expanding to other colors!
