Metro Rings Mini Quilt
I love mini quilts so much and mini quilt swaps are my absolute favorite! A few weeks ago I signed up for an Alison Glass mini swap. I figured this was a great opportunity to use some of the Alison Glass fabric that I love and have been saving. I'm trying to actually use my fabric that I love rather than hoard, so this was a great start. I picked the Metro Rings pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful.
I love patterns by Sew Kind of Wonderful because they always give you so much play with their curves. You always sew, trim, and repeat until you finish the blocks. My partner requested warm colors and I decided to add in the neutrals and a pop of blue. The pattern starts you with sewing strips of color together to get the patchwork on the rings. I alternated the warm colors with the gray.
Using the Quick Curve Ruler (affiliate link), you cut the fabric into curved strips to make the rings.
Next you'll add the background pieces, carefully curve piecing to either side of the strip. Notice how much gets trimmed off of the pieces. This gives so much flexibility to hide the imperfections of curved piecing.
Each of these pieces are then sewn into a block. I made 5 blocks total, 4 of them for this quilt: two with black ends and two with aqua ends. I couldn't decide which layout to choose.
I ultimately picked the circle layout. I turned the extra block I made into a mug rug. I used this block to test different quilting motifs to figure out what would look best. I think I over quilted the block and didn't haven't anything that stands out.
For the mini, I decided to stick with straight line quilting outlining the rings. There is no quilting on the rings themselves to help it stand out from the rest of the quilt.
I hope my partner loves my mini!
Do you love curved piecing? Have you tried a Sew Kind of Wonderful pattern?

This looks like a fun project, Sherry! I don’t have the Quick Curve Ruler, but it sure looks like it makes the process easier. Cool looking quilt!
I do love curved piecing – as you will see very soon! I love when you can trim to fit that gives you a little wiggle room. I have not yet tried a So Wonderful Ruler.
I wish I loved curved piecing. I’m just not comfortable with it, probably because I can’t sew at top speed. I’m working on patience, and will have to give curved piecing another try soon.
That looks fantastic! Great on you to use your AG fabrics. I’m tempted daily by the Quick Curves ruler, and Sew Kind of Wonderful has a whole bunch of patterns that I’m interested in, so I might have to get one. Does it allow you to have a large piece to trim up? My curved piecing is shoddy and I need to be able to trim it up. Thanks!
Thanks Liz! They allow for every step to trim. Like seriously, it’s awesome if you aren’t perfect. Their method also uses no pins, but rather guiding the fabric together while you sew.
Hi Sherry,
Such a wonderful quilt! I love, love, LOVE the colors you chose and especially the quilting! It just looks great – I love seeing how quilters chose their quilt patterns. ~smile~ Roseanne
No curves for me. No. Nope. I signed up for a class at a local quilt shop once, it was a beautiful pattern and the class blurb said “if you want to get over your fear of curves, this is the class for you!” Well okay then! I signed up, did all the prep, went to class, did moderately okay during class, and have literally not stitched a stitch on that project since. That was 5 years ago. My attempt to tackle curves failed.
Your mini, however, is lovely. I hope your partner loves it.
