Curated Quilts is a quarterly publication of quilts which follow that quarter's theme. There is a gallery of quilts, a few articles, a pattern or two, and a mini quilt gallery. The mini quilt gallery are mini quilts that are submitted from the viewers during the call for submissions timeframe. The volume 4 call for entries was during the month of March and followed the theme of the publication, Triangles.
The mini quilts needed to be square, larger than 10" but smaller than 16", and use some or all of the color theme. I love triangles and I wanted to make a mini showcasing some of my favorite triangles, flying geese! I got to drawing my idea out on paper and decided I wanted to do some intersecting and transparency for these flying geese.
Once I finished the paper drawing, I even did quilting planning on the page. Ultimately I didn't quilt the mini the way I drew it, but it was good to have some forward thinking about this mini. The following is an in-process photo, and you can see just how tiny some of these needed to be for the intersecting look. The quarter square triangles blocks ended up being 1" finished!
I decided to quilt the mini with all 5 of the colors in the color palette. I use 50wt Aurifil thread for piecing and quilting.
I used my walking foot to quilt the mini with matchstick quilting! I decided to keep the vertical flying geese sections unquilted and quilt vertical lines in the background instead. The horizontal flying geese sections were quilted in full, but with horizontal lines. This is the back of the quilt, and I love how you can see all the different colors of the quilting.
My finished quilt is among a lot of different entries, and I hope to hear back soon if I made it in the magazine! You can check out all of the entries submitted here.
I love these little design challenges! Have you submitted a Curated Quilts Mini before? What are some other mini design challenges you have participated in?
