What to do with Abandoned Blocks? (Friday Foto Fun #26)
Hello from Salt Lake City! It's been fun to get away to Sewtopia for this weekend, and I will be sure to give a recap on Tuesday. Prior to leaving, I was digging through my sewing room and found my stash of abandoned blocks. Most of these blocks were created with the 2017 Quilter's Planner Weekly Blocks, but I only made the first 22. I found another 3 blocks that were abandoned to come up with my 25 blocks.
I'm not quite sure what to do with the blocks, but I'm thinking maybe I should make them into a picnic quilt or something that I can just use or donate. All of the blocks are 12.5" so the finished quilt would be 60"x60". What do you do with your abandoned blocks?
As an update for my Autumn Mandala, I finished the piece right as my plane was landing into Salt Lake City! This is one of my all-time favorites from Cozy Blue Handmade, you can pick up a kit here.
I also heard back from Curated Quilts about my mini, and it didn't make the cut. Boo. Read about the mini here. Overall it was a pretty fun experience, so I'm hoping to do more small challenges in the future!
I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and if you ever get a chance to go to a sewing retreat make sure you go! I'll be posting photos of Sewtopia on my Instagram and Facebook Page this weekend!

Sherry, a picnic quilt sounds like a perfect make for your blocks. Love your embroidery. And it looks like you’re having a super fun sewing weekend! Can’t wait to hear about it!
A picnic quilt is a great idea! My abandoned blocks? They are stuck in a pile somewhere, although I did donate a few of them (I kept my favorites). Just realized you’re in Salt Lake City — we’re heading there at the end of the month, so I may need to get some info from you on places to go/eat. I’ll email you. Enjoy Sewtopia! That mandala is gorgeous, by the way!
Great idea to use those abandoned blocks for a picnic quilt. I’ve been using mine for quilting practise. They help me see how the design or motif looks a bit better than just drawing on plexiglass.
Cheers! Terry
I have a 12×12 scrapbook bin full of test/ abandoned blocks. They are all different sizes, but I t think I’ll just put them together, however they fit, and donate it. A picnic quilt is another great idea. I have LOTS of finished quilts, but none of them are ones I’d just pull out of the back of the car and throw on the ground.. or on a curb to watch a parade.. Thanks for keeping me motivated.
Today’s agenda includes putting away all things quilting and preparing the guest room for my sister and her husband. No quilting for me this weekend.
Hi Sherry,
I always thought it would be fun to exchange orphan blocks or send them to someone to collect and make a project for charity. I just have mine stuck in a drawer for now. Happy Friday!

I love the idea of a picnic quilt. I sometimes make pillows and am even thinking some of them may get to be benefits for A Doll Like Me or dog crate beds. Sorry your mini didn’t get in – better luck next time. Looked at Becca’s design challenge and I may go for it!
Your abandoned blocks are beautiful and deserve to be sewn up and used in some capacity! A picnic blanket sounds like a fun idea. I make my abandoned blocks into individual mugrugs or mini quilts. I’m sorry your mini didn’t get in! Like judging, It’s totally subjective.
I like how the fabrics seem to belong even though they are called orphans! What if you put the lighter ones in the center and the darker ones on the outside? I am looking forward to seeing your finish. Not sure I would want to use it as a picnic quilt. It’s too nice for that!
