Vintage Quilts Inspiring New Creations!
My favorite quilt block variation is the star block including the sawtooth star, the Ohio star, and really any shape of a star! This month the Island Batik Ambassador Challenge was to dig into the history of quilting and create a quilt inspired by the history. The fabrics featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and are a part of the Mountain's Majesty collection.
The star block is one of the oldest blocks and honestly my research didn't yield a lot of information besides that fact that the block is really old! I did however learn a lot about quilt making history in general. I think that is something I will need to read more about in the future. My quilting journey is really young, and no one else in my family quilted before me. I picked the sawtooth star as my inspiration for this quilt.
I really enjoyed making this block and watching it grow! I used the star in a star for this block to increase the size of the sawtooth stars.
Since I was using a 10" stacker also known as a layer cake, the largest half square triangles I could make were 9" finished. These 9" finished blocks are the outside portion of my Triple Sawtooth quilt.
The quilt finishes at 36" square and is a great little baby quilt or wall hanging. I decided to do some matchstick quilting along the diagonals of the quilt, but I quickly decided it would take forever! I added some square quilting around the centers before adding more matchstick diagonals.
I also used my very cute Binding Baby to bind my quilt. These are really handy to have, especially for the larger quilts because the binding gets really long! (Get your Binding Babies here, affiliate link)
Here is the finished quilt front and back!
I was trying to get a better shot to show some of the quilting, and the best one I got was taking a photo from an angle.
This quilt is also the very first quilt that I attached one of my new woven labels! I got these from CustomLabels4U.com, and they measure 0.75"x2" finished.
What quilt block inspires you?

Holy stars Batman! Star in a star in a star! Lol
I love what you came up with and it looks wonderful.
Those quilting buddies are super cute too! I’ve never seen those before. Are they a new product?
Your star quilt is very cool. You can’t go wrong with stars! I need to get a binding buddy, especially for those long bindings! New York Beauty blocks and Pickle Dish fascinate me. I like anything with points. Haha.
Love your take on a Sawtooth Star. Its terrific the way the star in a star works and it really is a fun little quilt. Your new woven labels are neat. I am working, kind of slowly, on getting a logo so I can get some of these!
Sawtooth star is my favorite star block, also. Love what you were able to make out of a layer cake. Great job on the quilting, too!
First off, Island Batiks always leave me drooling and I love that small pop of orange/yellow hiding in this bundle. I’m with you, I love a good star block and I love your take on the saw tooth by nesting them inside each other.
Your sawtooth star quilt is beautiful! I like the effect of nesting the stars inside each other.
Wonderful nested stars. I like stars, pinwheels, and mariners compass blocks.
