Pattern Play Challenge!
This month's Island Batik Challenge is to create a quilt that creates a secondary pattern! The fabrics featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik. I love secondary patterns, and I tend to use them in all of my quilts that I design! I decided to wait until I got my second ambassador box before deciding which fabrics to use in this quilt. Did you miss my unboxing video on Facebook? Check it out below!
Look at all these goodies that I received in my box! I am so excited about the Check It Out fabric because the checkers are so versatile! I decided to make my pattern play quilt with the purple and dark blue/purple Check It Out fabrics.
If this pattern looks familiar, it was the block pattern that I made for my June Monthly Color Challenge. I loved the secondary pattern created by the block so much I decided to make a baby quilt! You can pick up the block pattern on my Craftsy shop.
I decided to quilt a basic diagonal grid following the hourglass blocks. It is very simple but reinforces the secondary pattern of the quilt!
For the binding, I decided to alternate the two colors so that the corners matched the diagonals of the pattern. It was a little extra work to make sure my seams ended in the middle of each side, but I think it was definitely worth it!
I'm still trying out different places to take photos around my house. I have decided that sunset off the back deck railing makes my photo rather yellow. I'll have to try during midday to see if I get the same off coloring.
What are your thoughts on secondary patterns? Cool or boring?

How exciting! Like Christmas in July. Thanks for the video of you opening the box.
I love secondary patterns too, but I don’t know if I could come up with one on my own. I like challenges though, so I may just give it a try sometime.
Good choice of colors and designs. It looks very nice!
Your quilt looks great! Nice work with the checker board print. I thought it might be too assertive, but it looks great in your quilt.
I love it with the checks! Super cute!
Beautiful quilt and that is a lovely photo! Secondary patterns are really cool, they’re my favorite part of block designs.
Love this quilt-and I love secondary patterns. So much fun with the checkerboard fabric / it gives it even more movement!
The purple Check It Out line is perfect for this quilt, love it!
I love these colors together! And the Check It Out is especially fun. (Also, love that you are on a purple kick. I think my life is a purple kick!)
This turned out fabulously! How nice to be able to use one block for two different posts. 🙂
