Needle, Paper, Scissors Challenge!

This month's Island Batik Challenge is to create a quilt that is either foundation paper pieced or English paper pieced (EPP).  The fabrics featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.  I have a love-hate relationship with EPP, and I have yet to finish a single EPP project.  I opted to do some paper piecing this month instead and I found this beautiful pineapple paper pieced pattern by Pitcher's Boutique! Remember my pineapple addiction from my pineapple ornament, I just can't get enough!  The pineapple itself is 20" tall!

I decided to make this a wall hanging rather than a mini.  The pattern comes in multiple sizes, but I made the largest at 20".  There are 4 different green batiks for the top and 5 different yellow batiks for the pineapple body.

The pineapple came together pretty quickly.  I ended up assigning each of the colors a number and wrote on the paper which number went with that part to make sure I got an even blend throughout the piece.

I was really tempted to create a pillow cover with this mini, but I felt like there needed to be more color and I wanted it to hang in my kitchen!  I added an orange border around the pineapple to give it a citrus feel!

What do you think, should I have made a pillow?  or was the wall hanging the right choice?

Love it, especially the jagged edges on the pineapple. And the colours – perfect!

  2. Love the pineapple, and I think wall hanging was the way to go! It reminds me that I have a pineapple UFO I need to get quilted and done. It’s been waiting too long. Nice work, Sherry!

Wonderful pineapple and I, too, think the wallhanging for the kitchen is just perfect. I will have to jump on this bandwagon someday – right now I’ll be happy eating pineapples – one of my fave fruits.

I love this project, Sherry! The orange border works so well and brings out all the lovely warm tones of the pineapple. Great job!!

  5. I think a wall hanging is a great choice, especially given how much you like pineapples!

This looks great! I like it as a wall hanging. The orange border really coordinates well. I tell people who are scared of paper piecing to use batiks or solids so there is not a wrong side to the fabric; I think that eliminates one common or easy to make mistake with paper piecing.

  7. What a fun project. I would make a pillow.
