Holiday Gifts: Hexie Coasters

Tis the season!  As I eluded to on Friday, I've been looking for quick handmade gifts to make my team.  I had forgotten to mention that a large majority were maintenance personnel so they don't have an office.  But for those who do have an office, I tried out the  5-minute hexie coaster tutorial by Sharla from Thistle Thicket Studio!

These were SO much fun to make!  I decided on 3 festive winter fabrics and used my Hex N More ruler to create 4.5" hexagons. I used 4.5" by width of fabric strips and cut 8 hexagons from each strip.  I used 3 strips per each printed fabric and ended up with 10 coasters and 2 extra hexagons.  I used one of the print hexagons for the backing of the coaster as shown on the bottom row.

I opted to topstitch around the edges of the coaster, and it seems to have flattened out the coaster quite a bit by doing this.

Here's a photo for size, my "You Are Here" Starbucks Mug is a 14oz mug and fits on the coaster perfectly!  Most of my drinking glasses would have a smaller base and would still look very festive!

My favorite thing about this coaster is that you can really make it in any size!  Use larger hexagons and add some Insulbright and make it a hot pad!  It's also really magical that you sew 100% around the piece and flip from the center where all the hexagons meet.

What are YOU making for handmade gifts this year? Share below!
