Vintage Reimagined Challenge! (Friday Foto Fun #77)
It's almost April and I'm squeaking in a close to last minute finish for my March Island Batik Ambassador Challenge! This month we were tasked to create a quilt that was inspired by vintage quilts! The fabrics showcased in this post were given to me by Island Batik as a part of their ambassador program. I used the Ohio Star as the basis of my vintage design. This is my favorite traditional quilt block.
I took the Ohio Star block and made it MUCH bigger and made it a contrasting color. Here are the blocks on my design wall.
The dark blue is also an Ohio Star but each of the squares in the 9-patch have an Ohio Star in it as well. I ended up putting a border around the quilt to help frame the quilt. I used Hobbs Tuscany Collection Silk Blend batting for the quilt! It feels really nice and quilted well. It's less poofy than wool but I think it has a little more loft than cotton.
I also decided that I want to bite the bullet and try to free motion all of my challenge quilts for this year's program! I have to start somewhere to get better at free motion quilting! You can see I used some pebbles and some filler designs in my quilting. Click on the photos to enlarge and see the detail. No matter how much I tell myself I won't "ruin" the quilt, I have this huge fear that my beginner-level free motion skills will ruin the quilt. I'm happy with how this turned out!
I always use my binding babies to eliminate a pile of binding on the floor when I bind my quilts. Here are some other glamour shots of the quilt!
What is your favorite quilt block?

Sherry this is a great pattern! The Ohio Star reimagined. Have fun with your FMQ!
I agree with Jan — this is a great pattern! Your quilting looks great too! Nice finish!
Awesome quilt design, Sherry!!! Wow!!! And great job doing FMQ.
This is a great “combination” design, using the star as both large and small elements in the quilt.
Love your shadow quilt design and the fabrics you’ve chosen. Your quilting does not look beginner at all. How did you like the silk blend batting?
I can never decide, I love Flying Geese, but this year have become enamored with Churn Dash. I guess I just love them all. I do love your Star piece, so many things you can do with the star patterns.
Turned out wonderfully!
Awesome design, Sherry. Your quilting is fabulous!!!
Wonderful quilt! I always love stars – and stars within stars are even better!
Hi Sherry, love your quilt and FMQ. It’s all about practice and just doing it! I hope that you’ll be able to link up to Free Motion Mavericks with Muv and I. We’d love to have you!
Your quilting looks good. Pretty quilt design.
Wow, I love this! The Ohio Star in an Ohio Star is beautiful! And these are great colors.
I love the Ohio Star block and your take on it is beautiful!
