Try It Challenge!
This month's Island Batik Challenge is to Try It! The fabrics and batting featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and Hobbs Batting.
I have owned the parts and pieces to make a full-sized tuffet for almost 3 years. However, I have not had the guts to actually make a tuffet! There are lots of parts and pieces to purchase if you are not getting a kit.
Here are the supplies you'll need:
- Pattern: Quick and Cute Tuffets by Erin Underwood Quilts
- Foam core
- 4 feet
- Wooden base (not shown)
- Twine
- Size 100 button to cover
- 15deg ruler
- Batting (not shown)
- Staple gun (not shown)
- Upholstery needle (not shown)
- Dowel rod (not shown)
Lots of supplies that have been gathering dust in my sewing room because of fear!
This particular pattern uses the 15deg ruler for the wedges. I love Island Batik solids because they press SUPER flat and the bulky center was not very noticeable. It looks like striped candy!
I didn't take too many in-progress photos because I was too busy wrangling the bits of the tuffet, but I love how it turned out. The pattern also calls to trim the top corner edge, essentially to round the edge. I attempted this but very quickly realized that I didn't have the proper tools and opted to keep the sides square and not rounded. This in turn made my tuffet very... cylindrical and putting the button down the middle would have made it very awkward looking. I think my tuffet looks pretty good just being a cylinder!
Some tips to make it, I used a 6" foam circle, but I probably should have gone with an 8". I ended up with more fabric on the button of the tuffet than I'd wanted and had to get the feet installed before pulling the cord tight to really wrap the fabric around the tuffet.
Also, huge shoutout to my brother-in-law Greg who drilled all the holes I needed in the wooden base for the feet and button. He did this almost 2 years ago, I bet he never thought I'd finish it!
Be sure to follow the Island Batik Facebook page to see what the other ambassadors are making this month!

Great job on the tuffet, Sherry! I love the candy striped effect. I haven’t made one, but they’re sure cute to admire.
Yay for crossing that off the quilty list!! If you decide you want to try the rounded edge top, a steak knife cuts that foam. It would be a quick and easy thing to change!
I’ve always liked the look of the tuffet, but never really wanted to make one. Yours turned out really well. It does look like striped candy! What a fun addition to your quilting space!
I love it! Making a tuffet is on my “try it” list – I hope I get around to it someday 🙂
LOVE IT!
I’m about half way through my tuffet; same pattern as you but mine is a solid blue. I do have a lot of fabric in the center point but the button should cover that. Thanks for the tips though!
It looks great, like something you would see Charlie grab in the Willy Wonka factory.
It turned out super cute!! Well I just made the little pincushion tuffet and love it! Wasn’t a kit, I just used what I had on hand.
It looks great. I’ve wanted to make one, but so many supplies are needed. Well done.
Haha. My tuffet has been waiting for two years. Maybe I should find all the pieces and put it together, too! I love your cylindrical tuffet! It looks so much more modern than the curvy ones.
A tuffet is on my someday list!! Love the candy stripe effect of yours.
I love your variation! I have had my share of upholstery adventures and would go with the pincushion version. I like the shape of yours more than the original…just saying.
WOW! It does look like a piece of candy–scrumptious fabric candy! Love it! What a great project!
