Bag Making Challenge (Friday Foto Fun #147)
Woohoo! Internet is all better! I was able to finish my Waterlily Tote last weekend on my Twitch stream. This month's Aurifil Artisan Challenge was Bag Making! Since I've been making bags all year with Aurifil thread, I decided to try something new and sew with waxed canvas!
The front of the bag has a hidden zippered pocket, while the back of the bag has 2 slip pockets. Pretty much all of the exterior pieces are waxed canvas except the base which is cork. The handles and straps are also made out of cork.
The different colors of thread came in super handy for the topstitching details of the bag.
I used the white for stitching the interior lining of the bag together. There is an interior zipper pocket as well as three large slip pockets.
I picked 40wt thread for this project because of the thickness of the waxed canvas and cork. I wanted my thread to be super strong! I think I need to grow my 40wt thread collection to use on all my bags. Even though I know the bags I've sewn with 50wt hold up just fine, I think the 40wt thread may be more durable for my bags.
A couple of tips for using waxed canvas:
- Don't use an iron, the wax will melt.
- Hang the waxed canvas up overnight if it's creased and it'll get rid of large creases
- Sew like normal!
Bag details:
- Pattern: Waterlily Tote by Blue Calla Patterns
- Thread: Aurifil 40wt in matching colors (2630,2835,2024)
- Waxed Canvas and Cork: Fabric Funhouse (mint and charcoal)
- Bag Hardware: Sallie Tomato Hardware in Gunmetal
Another super fun thing that you should know, I am this month's Aurifil Designer of the Month! Check out the Auribuzz post to read my interview with Pat Sloan and download my free block!
Tomorrow I'm doing another bag day on my Twitch stream revisiting the Brooklyn Bag! This time I'll be making the traveler size rather than the handbag version! Come hang out, chat, and sew! Going live at 8am Mountain time.

Most of what I accomplished this week was secret sewing, so no finishes to link up. I enjoyed reading your interview with Pat – fun to see the photos, too!
That’s such a cool bag! I haven’t considered using 40 wt thread on sturdier objects, but that’s really a brilliant idea. And I love the block you designed!
It looks great. I’m sewing with friends this weekend, and two of us are making bags!!
