I Wish You a Merry QAL Block 5!

I am so proud to share the Snowman block I designed!  I used Moda Grunge Evergreen, White Paper, Onyx, and Red for the piecing portion of the block.  Mr. Snowman’s nose is a Moda Grunge Orange scrap.

When we first started planning this QAL, I jumped at the chance to make a Snowman block!  Snowmen are my favorite thing about winter and the holidays, especially cute snowmen.  As you can see, I made a lot of not-so-cute and not-so-proportional snowmen through the different iterations of the design I tried.

I Wish You A Merry QAL Block 4!

Block 4 is revealed! Jennifer Fulton of Inquiring Quilter designed Block 4, Christmas Memories. The week is a doubleheader so there is another post to show Block 3 (and there are separate prizes too)!

This ornament block has a lot of intricate applique. I used Moda Grunge White Paper as my background and all sorts of different metallic fabric for the ornaments. Using raw edge applique, remember to cut out the centers of the fusible material to make your blocks more pliable. I drew the smaller pieces inside the larger ones to utilize the fusible material.

I also laid out the all ornaments on the block before fusing everything at once. I did not have applique paper or parchment paper handy at the time so I couldn’t fuse the ornaments together before fusing to the background.

I Wish You A Merry QAL Block 3!

Block 3 is revealed!  Laura Piland of Slice of Pi Quilts designed Block 3, Santa’s Belt.  The week is a doubleheader so there is another post to show Block 4. (and there are separate prizes for that one too!)

Santa’s belt is a block that is constructed only with piecing.  I used Moda Grunge Basics Red, Onyx, and Sunflower for my 3 colors of the belt.  The block went together very quickly to become such an iconic belt!

Make sure you have an accurate 1/4″ seam, and you’ll be able to make this block very quickly!

I Wish You A Merry QAL Block 2!

Block 2 is revealed! April Adams from JANDA Bend Quilts designed this amazing block! The block is made with templates or paper piecing. Sticking with the Moda Grunge theme, my tree tops are Grunge Evergreen, the trunks are Grunge Basics Bison, and the background is Grunge White Paper.

IMG_20170811_164443_wm

I am not a big fan of making templates due to my lack of experience, but I LOVE paper piecing. If you have never paper pieced before, I wrote a very detailed tutorial on how to paper piece without any special paper or tools! You can check that here.

If you decide to do paper piecing, here are the cutting dimensions I used for my pieces. You will need to cut 8 of each.

  • Tree tops (green) – 3″x4-1/4″
  • Background (white) – 4″x4″

The background pieces I sliced in half on a diagonal. I folded the templates on the sewing lines and ensured I had enough seam allowance on both sides before cutting. You will cut 4 using the A1 side of the template and 4 using the A3 side of the template.

Note that the right side of the fabric should be facing down, since the printed part of the paper is always the back of the unit.

For the tree trunk, I followed the strip piecing instructions rather than the paper piece part. I did not trim the trunks until after I had sewn them onto the tree tops. I didn’t want to stress out about centering the trunks when I trimmed.

Don’t forget to submit your completed block on April’s linky party, the Facebook Group Page, and/or on Instagram with #iwishyouamerryqal to be entered into this block’s prizes! One lucky person will win a $25 gift card to the Fat Quarter Shop donated by Jan from Cocoa Quilts and a pdf copy of “Geese in Flower Pots” by April!

Aug15

The prize entry window for Block 2 goes from 12AM Eastern on August 15, 2017 until 11:59PM Eastern on August 28, 2017.

If you are just now joining us in the QAL, I have a quick links page to catch up on the blocks in this QAL and my associated blog posts. You can also get to that page at any time by clicking the I Wish You a Merry QAL button on the right sidebar.

I Wish You A Merry QAL Block 1!

Today is the day! Block 1 is released, and I am so excited to share my version of this week’s block.  Vanda Chittenden of Quilt in Piece is the designer of this week’s Snowflake Block.  Check out her blog post for the tutorial and the pattern of the block.

IMG_20170731_184830_wm

My block is made of Moda Grunge Basics Navy with the snowflake in Grunge White Paper.  I used Heat and Bond Lite for my fusible adhesive and a blanket stitch to secure the snowflake.

A few tips on this block:

  • Cut the centers of the fusible, so that the block doesn’t get too stiff and bulky.  The adhesive really only needs to be on the edges of the each snowflake petal. I also did not cut the snowflakes apart when I ironed on the white fabric.  This helped stabilize the fusible sheet prior to ironing.

IMG_20170728_153330_wm

  • Lay out the entire block before ironing on the pieces so you can play with the exact layout.

IMG_20170728_160522_wm

  • If you do not have a blanket stitch on your machine, a simple zig zag or straight stitch on the edge will be just fine.

Don’t forget to submit your completed block on Vanda’s linky party, the Facebook Group Page, and/or on Instagram with #iwishyouamerryqal to be entered into this week’s prizes!  One lucky person will win a PDF pattern by Vanda Chittenden and a Sugar Plum Christmas thread box from Aurifil.

weekly update

Off to a retreat… last minute!

So some time earlier this week I had a mini panic attack that I was not getting nearly enough stuff done.  Stitch Supply Co. is having one of their “per person” retreat weekends, which means anyone can sign up to claim one of their 16 beds at their retreat center without renting out the entire space!  So that’s where I’m headed today and can hopefully focus on getting stuff done!

If you follow me on social media, you’ve probably noticed a slow down in progress in general, and that’s partly due to secret sewing but really it’s the effect of my life getting super hectic. And if you don’t follow me yet, you should! Here are my Instagram and Facebook pages.

Here is a quick rundown of the projects that got some focus this week.  S.W.A.K, the quilt I’m making for a blog hop later in August has all the HST units trimmed, and I’d say it is 50% assembled into blocks for the quilt top.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to finish the quilt top this weekend, but now I’m not quite sure how to show a sneak peak without giving it away.  So maybe I’ll try to take photos if and when I decide to quilt the thing.

IMG_20170726_100127_043

I made a little bit more progress on my Peacock EPP project.  I had divided the papers into little baggies by strips and of course didn’t label them.  So by the time I figured out the baggie I opened on the very right hand side, I decided just to sew those together. I was trying to go left to right on the piece, but that plan is now out the window.  What are quilters, if not flexible?

Last but not least, can you guys believe it?  The I Wish You a Merry QAL starts in 4 days!!  It’s seriously time to get hyped!  So here’s a little bit more information about prizes, and I’ll repeat this on Tuesday just in case you forget.  Each block release, there will be a prize for people that share their block on Facebook, Instagram, or the Linky party on the designer’s tutorial site.  The giveaway time frame will be from the release date at midnight Eastern to 11:59 PM Eastern the night before the next block is released.  For example, Block 1’s giveaway timing is going to start at 12:00 AM Eastern on August 1 and run through 11:59 PM on August 14. Be sure to share your completed blocks! There are lots more prizes during this entire QAL so I hope you will join us!
If you haven’t checked out the QAL Facebook page, what are you waiting for?!

Anyway, I gotta run to the retreat, have a great weekend everyone!

I Wish You A Merry Quilt-A-Long!

I wish you a merry quilt-a-long, I wish you a merry quilt-a-long, I wish you a merry quilt-a-long, and a happy new year!  I’m already caroling for this holiday season!  Join me along with a dozen other bloggers in this fun quilt-a-long adventure this fall to get a Christmas Quilt done before Christmas!

Image uploaded from iOS

So what exactly is a Quilt-A-Long?

A Quilt-A-Long (or QAL) is a quilt you make following a host who posts each step on a schedule.  You share your progress and in this case you will get entered into some pretty awesome prizes!  There are some QALs that are set to make a known quilt and others (like this one) that are a mystery, where you won’t know what the quilt looks like until the very end!  There is no charge to enter the QAL and the patterns will be posted for free from each designer.  Make one or all of the blocks!

Why would you want to join?

  • You love Christmas and want to make a Christmas quilt before the holiday gets here.
  • You love meeting new quilters/designers/bloggers!
  • You love to try new things.  These blocks will be incorporating different techniques with support of the hosts and designers to help you along each step of the way.  This quilt is for experienced and new beginners alike.
  • You love to win prizes.  If you complete a block prior to the next block release, you’ll be entered to win a prize. There is also a grand prize for the finished quilt.
  • You don’t want to be left out!  (We’re a fun bunch of ladies from around the globe.)

How can I participate?

There are several ways in which you can participate in all the fun!

  1. If you are on Facebook: Join the “I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long” Facebook Group. Each Designer will be posting links to their tutorials there, and it will be used as a place to ask questions and post photos of your finished block for prizes.
  2. If you are on Instagram: Use the hashtag #iwishyouamerryqal on your finished block to be entered to win.
  3. Each Designer will have a Linky Party on their block tutorial post so you can link your progress to their blog to be entered to win.

How much fabric will I need to complete this quilt?

This is a tough question.  Each block will be 12″ finished, and there will be 12 different blocks. I will be planning on using my scraps to make this quilt with a color palette of red, green, white, yellow, and blue from my stash. I figure I’ll need approximately a yard of each.  I will need scraps of black, orange, and brown for embellishments.  Plus, Laura from Slice of Pi Quilts says, “If you plan to put your blocks together to make a quilt top, then I suggest 1 yard for sashing and 1 yard for a border. To finish the quilt, you will need 4 yards for backing (or 2 yards of extra-wide backing), a twin size batting, and 1/2 yard for binding.”

What is the schedule?

The fun kicks off Tuesday, August 1st with block tutorials released every other Tuesday.  There are 2 dates that will have 2 blocks releasing the same day.  If you forget, don’t worry!  I made a quick links page to each tutorial that will be updated with each new block release. I will also be posting here for each block release!  The last block tutorial will be published December 5th to give you time to finish off the quilt before Christmas!

What are the prizes?

We’ve line up plenty of prizes, and the list isn’t finalized yet. It’s best to keep an eye on the Facebook group, as we will begin sharing the prizes there soon. Prizes include patterns, batting and other products from The Warm Co., thread from Aurifil, a gift certificate to The Fat Quarter Shop, signed quilt books, precuts, and much more. International participants are eligible to enter for all prizes.

I want in!  What’s are my next steps?

Yippee!  First, go ahead and join our Facebook page so you’ll know when the next block tutorials will be released.  Second, gather your fabric you’ll want to use on your quilt.  The QAL starts August 1, 2017 so you have about 2 weeks to get hyped!  Finally, invite your friends to join in on the fun!  Share the quilt-a-long graphic on Instagram and use #iwishyouamerryqal. Share this blog post or a post from the Facebook group on your own Facebook account and in your quilty groups. The more, the merrier!

Who all is running this QAL?

All the bloggers who are participating in the QAL met through the 2017 New Quilt Bloggers Blog Hop.

Some of us will be sewing along and making every block, too. These quilt-a-long hosts will share tips and tricks for each block, plus you’ll get to see the same block in many different fabrics. Hosts will be there every step of the way to encourage you to finish the quilt.
