#365DaysOfArtPBQChallenge Week16, Exercises 106-112
Spring is here!!! Well, at least 60 degree weather for the first time in 2018! Week 16 of the 365 Days Of Art Challenge! I was flipping through all the pages that I've completed and just thought about how far I've come with at least the creative thought process. If you haven't started yet, no worries! Without further ado, here are my 7 for this week… the good, bad, and ugly!
#106 Draw the horizon on this grey sky. Lately I have been obsessed with skylines, so I decided to make a black skyline on this grey sky. When I was landing a few weeks ago I took like 30 photos of the Minneapolis skyline as inspiration for making some sort of skyline. When I was practicing drawing the skylines, I realized that unless you were targeting to draw a specific city, skylines are just tall buildings. Very interesting that with no specific specialty building, it's just a generic city.
#107 Draw lots of mouths. I admit that I fail at drawing faces and facial features. I did however try to think of different types of mouths to draw. I included some with teeth, some that were open, some stick happy face smiles, and just some lips. My most used mouth... the U.
#108 Draw lots of eyes. Like the mouths exercise, I attempted to draw eyes that would be used in different styles. I think I enjoyed the eyes more than the mouths, and I liked the fact I could get away with drawing a singular eye. Typically when I have to draw eyes in pairs, one always ends up slanted and wonky. I tried to get some anime and cartoon-ish eyes in there too.
#109 Add the reef by drawing your own coral, or by additional fish and sea life. All the coral at the bottom with all the pretty detail was printed in the book. I sat and stared at this exercise for quite a while before deciding what to do. I am not good at drawing coral and the couple times that I went snorkeling I was sorely disappointed that all the coral I saw was very neutral colored and brown. I decided to just add lots of fish and algae to reef. Did you notice that I drew a school of fish? ...in the shape of a fish?! Something kind of fun and got me thinking maybe I should make a quilt with fish in the shape of a fish with fish fabric!
#110 Design a pattern using the grid. The hexagon grid is back! This was also exercise #50! I was trying to do an asymmetrical piece because those are the hardest for my brain to get wrapped around. I think I ended up with a D shape of hexie flowers and other colors that just support the blue.
#111 Shading can add depth to your drawings. There are different techniques for shading, including the ones below. The left hand side was printed with the book and I added the right hand side. I think some of these techniques are very fun for drawing, but you see some of these in quilting as well. Transparency has been really big lately and thinking about how we can shade color within a quilt has been really fun.
#112 Draw a scene in this window. Are you looking in or out? I am looking out! (specifically at the house across the street) However, I think this is how I drew houses in my sketches growing up, and I still like the look... except that the framing of the printed window was hard to draw around. I should have drawn my image and erased the pencil marks in the framing.

These are great, Sherry. It’s interesting to hear your thoughts around what you had to draw, and how it’s making you think about designs, etc. Your school of fish in the shape of a fish — very clever!
