Fall Into A QAL Block 6!
Today's the day Block 6 is released! This is the second block that I designed for this Quilt Along! One of my favorite things about fall is eating Pies! Something about the weather getting colder and devouring a yummy Cherry Berry pie from Grand Traverse Pie Company makes me super happy! So here is my fabulous Pie block!
My block is made of all Moda Grunge fabrics. The background of the block is pieced, and I wanted it to be versatile to have anything you wanted to be on the cute table. I picked a variety of pinks for the gingham tablecloth and two colors of brown for the wood paneling behind the table.
Here's the finished background. I chain pieced the strips together to speed up the sewing of the block.
The next step was to add the pie to the table. I used my Daylight Light Box to trace the pieces to the paper side of Heat and Bond Lite.
Use paper scissors to cut out each of the shapes. For the larger shapes, I cut out the centers to make my pieces not as stiff. Iron the adhesive to the back of the desired fabric following the manufacturer's instructions.
I used Karen Buckley scissors to cut the shapes out. The serrated edge helps give a clean cut. Remove the papers and place the pieces on the desired location on the block. Use an iron to fuse the pieces to the background.
Use a blanket stitch or a zig zag stitch to secure the raw edges to the background. The last step is to backstitch the steam lines to the block. I freehand drew the steam lines. You can choose to trace the lines given in the pattern or make your own! You can find my tutorial on backstitching here.
After I finished one of the steam lines, I decided that a whipped backstitch would look better than a normal backstitch. Here's how you create a whipped backstitch:
- Bring the needle back up to the front.
- Thread the needle from right to left under the stitch.
- Repeat with the next stitch.
- You will not bring the needle to the back until the end. At the end, bring the needle to the back and secure the ends.
And then there were 6 blocks completed! We are halfway through!
Don't forget to submit your completed block on my linky party below, the Facebook Group Page, and/or on Instagram with #FallIntoAQAL to be entered into this week's prizes! One lucky person will win a PDF pattern donated Powered by Quilting (that's me!) and 4 half yard cuts of assorted Boundless Fabric Solids donated by Craftsy. The winner will be randomly selected from those who post photos of their completed blocks by the deadline. Although creativity is encouraged, the block must follow the design for this two-week period. You must be 18 to enter.
The prize entry window starting from 12AM Eastern on July 24, 2018, until 11:59PM Eastern on August 6, 2018.
As a reminder, I have a quick links page to catch up on the blocks in this QAL and my associated blog posts. You can also get to that page by clicking the Fall Into A QAL button on the right sidebar.
The sponsors for the grand prize have also been announced. In order to be eligible for the grand prize, you must make a quilt top using all twelve of the QAL blocks by November 13th, 2018. Please note that all patterns are only free until the end of the QAL.
Happy Sewing! I can't wait to see your blocks!
