Cupcake Mix Recipe Creations!

Remember when I toured the Moda Warehouse in June? I got a Garden Variety Charm Pack and a Cupcake Mix Recipe to try out.  I have seen the Recipe cards before but hadn't had a chance to use them yet.  I figured this would be a great time to try them out!

The Cupcake Mix Recipes pair perfectly with a Charm Pack and a Cake Mix Recipe pairs with a Layer Cake. I didn't have any solid charm packs, so I ended up cutting 5" white squares from yardage to pair with my charm pack.  The recipe pack comes with 44 sheets and the front of the package shows the types of blocks that can be created with the sheets.  I decided that I wanted to make a pillow with Block 3 of the Cupcake Mix Recipe #4.

You need one charm pack square and one solid 5" square for each recipe sheet.  I put the charm pack square and solid square right sides together.  Then I pinned the recipe square on top of both fabrics.

There are sewing lines and cutting lines on each recipe card.  Make sure to remember to shorten your stitch length on your machine before you start to sew.  The shorter stitch length will help when removing the papers.

My pillow cover consisted of 9 blocks that used 18 recipe cards.  I have 20" pillows at home so I had to add a 1" border around the pillow.  Since Garden Variety isn't out yet, I used the navy blue from the charm packs to create a pieced border. For my pillows, I like having a zipper closure.  You want to make the zipper tabs on the edges and add the zipper in the center of the pillow.  Mine ended up off center because I cut my backing incorrectly, but I made it work.

If you notice that my pillow corners aren't square, I used my pillow trimmer to help allow my finished filled pillow look square.  I also remembered to open the zipper before sewing the backing and the front together!  I forgot last time and it was rather interesting trying to get the zipper open from the back.

This was my finished pillow cover and it's rather noticeable that the borders taper at the corners.  However, the finished pillow looks fantastically square!  Magic!

My final verdict:  Recipe Cards are actually really handy to use.  I normally dislike 6" blocks but this was really easy to make and my blocks came out perfectly.  The only downside is the set types of blocks you can make, but many different types of recipe cards have been released.  I need to get myself some Cake Mix Recipe Cards to make larger blocks!
