Cozy Cabin: Log Cabin Challenge!

This month's Island Batik Challenge is to create a quilt that incorporates log cabins or a twist on log cabins.  The fabrics featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.  I must admit that I have never made a quilt with log cabins as I have previously found them to not be that exciting (*ducks from the firing squad*).  I have been toying with a modified log cabin that varies the widths of the fabric, and I came up with this beauty!

I haven't made a classic red and white quilt yet either.  I used Red from the Check It Out fabric line and Sprinkles for my white.  I think the fabric choices look superb with the design.  After I created all the blocks, I was playing with the layout and the engineering brain of mine wouldn't let me do a random chaotic layout.  Must be orderly and must have a structure... one of these days I'll break the mold.

This was the very first time that I've tried any wool batting too.  I used Hobbs Tuscany Collection and I LOVE the finished product.  However, I was a bit confused on why I couldn't really iron the batting directly like cotton batting.  I felt like my iron got stuck... does anyone know the reason for this?  Or was this just a rookie mistake since I've never used wool before?

Look at how poofy the quilt turns out with the wool batting.  I think this is definitely something I need to use more often!  I did a simple straight line grid with Aurifil thread (my thread of choice!).

No outside photos with this quilt since we had a blizzard yesterday and snow/ice is EVERYWHERE!  The pretty phase of snow has come and left, now it's just ugly.  Hopefully, it melts soon!

The last bit of news, my quilt tops for spring/summer 2019 Island Batik catalog are off to the longarm today!  I spent most of the holiday sewing up a storm!  I love my experience as an ambassador, and ambassador applications for 2019 are still open until December 7th!

Here's where I need your help:  Have you seen this pattern before or should I write a fun tutorial or pattern for it?

I have not seen this quilt pattern before. Would love a tutorial! Thanks for sharing your creativity and patterns. Love your work.

  3. My first quilt was a log cabin. I also thought it was too boring. I just made another one, and it was hard to finish, because I just wasn’t in to it. However, I have been playing around with making wonky log cabins, and it is way more fun. I have never seen a pattern like yours, and it would be great if you provided a tutorial. It looks like a fun quilt.

  4. Cute red and white quilt, Sherry! I’ve not used wool batting yet, so I’m curious if you’ll get an answer to your ironing question. I wonder if it’s the density of the batting that causes the iron to drag a bit? I suppose there might also be the possibility of scorching if it’s wool? Just guesses, here.

I love this cute red and white, Sherry! Just like Wendy I haven’t used wool batting yet. It has been on my list to do, just haven’t bought it yet to try out. Glad to hear your review and it makes me want to get it and try.

  6. I love your design! It’s fun and a unique take on the log cabin block. I haven’t seen one like this before.

  7. I love your log cabin, red/white and nice use of the check it out fabric! I too, feel like I need order in my chaos. I do love the experimenting we do with these projects!

  8. I haven’t seen the pattern before. Love it in red and white

I love the log cabin designs, because they are so versatile with settings, and there are so many ways to do them. This one is a definite winner, and I have NOT seen another one like it. You should at least do a tutorial, if you have time, and if you make the pattern, I will certainly buy it. =) Red and white was a wonderful choice for this. By the way, it may be put together precisely, but there’s still a nicely random look to it. =)
