North Stars Reindeer Block

Can you make a block without all the fabric you need? The short answer is no, but that didn't stop me from trying to do this. Remember my destash a few weeks ago? I decided that I wanted to make the North Stars Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman since I bought all the Arctic fabric years ago to make it.

Well, I may have had the Arctic fabric but I've had to order all of Kona and Essex for the background and accents for the block. I received the background of the block and the white accents, but I'm waiting for the dark accent and the sashing fabrics. It's never a good idea to start a quilt without all the fabric, but I tried anyway! I am just so excited about this quilt.

Ta Da! Look at my block! Pretty much this is just the borders of the blocks and the reindeer is almost done.

The darker accent is used for the eyes and nose of the head and without those, this is as far as I could get. The antlers are thin piecing so accuracy in my seams is a must to get it to finish at the appropriate size.

The darker accent is also used for the reindeer hooves. This piece was a little harder to sew all together because, without the hooves, I couldn't sew any part of the bottom section of the body together!

All in all, this block has taken me just about 4 hours to get this far. There were so many different sized pieces in this one block alone, but it's just so cute! I'm still waiting a little impatiently for the rest of my fabric order to come in so I can finish this quilt! I think I'm planning on making one block a month until I can get this quilt top complete!
