Decovil Light, To use or not to use? (Friday Foto Fun #168)
After I completed the Rudeneja Handbag this past weekend, I wanted to know exactly what would have happened if I used the Decovil Light interfacing on the exterior as the pattern suggested. Read about my Rudeneja experience here. I was a little disappointed with how slouchy the bag turned out to be, but that was my own fault for skipping the Decovil Light. I decided I wanted to make a handbag with the interfacing to see what it would have changed. I picked a self-drafted pattern of a shoulder bag that I designed, but it's definitely easier to make than the Rudeneja bag.
This is the 5th iteration of this bag as I've done improvements or additions to each one I've made. I used the Decovil Light on the exterior pieces and changed the strap to be 4 layers of vinyl rather than 2 layers of vinyl with 2 layers of fabric. The photo below shows iterations 3, 4, and 5. Notice how the other two bags slouch or cavitate. The most recent bag with the Decovil Light does not. The interfacing helps keep the structure of the bag.
I am impressed with how easily the Decovil Light fused on the back of the vinyl too. I get nervous ironing on vinyl in case it melts, but the interfacing fused so quickly that I wasn't concerned. The bag itself has a zipper on the back of the purse. I did learn that I didn't like the interfacing on the zipper portion, it was hard to turn.
I added a set of small purse feet to the bottom of the bag.
The bag has a recessed zipper and the interior has a slip pocket and zipper pocket (not shown in the photo).
Overall, I really love having the Decovil Light on the exterior of the bag. I think I will start adding it to all my vinyl exterior bags to eliminate the slouchy bag syndrome!
What are your sewing plans this weekend?
I will NOT be streaming tomorrow due to getting my vaccine shot in the morning! I plan on taking it easy this weekend just in case I have any side effects. I'll be back on Twitch NEXT Saturday for the March Quilt in a Day stream!
