Fall Into A QAL Block 8!

Today's the day Block 8 is released!  Are the leaves changing colors yet?!  Jennifer from Inquiring Quilter designed a paper pieced leaf block!  If you are new to paper piecing, there is a beginner version of the block too!  I made the confident beginner block which is just slightly more difficult.

My block is made of all Moda Grunge fabrics.  I used two different shades of yellow, two different shades of orange, a red, green, and brown for the stem.  I love the different tones in Moda Grunge instead of a flat, solid color.

Here are my top tips!

  • If you need paper piecing instructions, check out my tutorial.
  • Check your 1" test square!  The first set I printed from my IE browser, it didn't let change the size and my printout was too small.  I had to open it in Chrome and make sure that the "fit to page" option was NOT checked.  My printouts were perfect from Chrome! (click on the image to see a larger version)
  • I used my Daylight lightbox to align the G8 pieces together on the alignment line.  Make sure this is aligned correctly so the piece is sized correctly.
  • Stack each set of fabrics with the section you are working on so you don't mix up the fabrics.
  • Don't forget to trim 1/4" away from the solid line and use your ruler when you can.
  • I laid out my pieces right sides up to see how the block fit together before sewing all the parts together.

Good luck on your block!  I can't wait to see it!

Don't forget to submit your completed block on Jennifer's linky party, the Facebook Group Page, and/or on Instagram with #FallIntoAQAL to be entered into this week's prizes!  One lucky person will win a 6-month subscription to Make Modern.  Make Modern is a digital magazine for the online quilting community, brought to you by a group of passionate modern quilters in Australia. Every issue includes 10-14 modern quilt patterns plus 10-14 feature articles by amazing quilters from all over the globe.

The prize entry window starting from 12AM Eastern on August 20, 2018, until 11:59PM Eastern on September 3, 2018.

As a reminder, I have a quick links page to catch up on the blocks in this QAL and my associated blog posts.  You can also get to that page by clicking the Fall Into A QAL button on the right sidebar.

The sponsors for the grand prize have also been announced. In order to be eligible for the grand prize, you must make a quilt top using all twelve of the QAL blocks by November 13th, 2018. Please note that all patterns are only free until the end of the QAL.

I’m loving your grunge blocks!!! Your paper pieced leaf is so pretty!! Great tips! Have you done much paper piecing? I could be happy only making blocks using this method.

  3. All the versions are great, but I am envious of yours, the dots and the solids. Each different but looking great. I have to agree with the different colors of grunge as being one of my favorite things about it.

  4. Your block is so lovely! I love the idea of using a light box to line up the registration mark. One of these days, I may have to invest in one.

  5. Your Leaf block is beautiful Sherry! It perfectly captures Fall’s changing colors 🍂🍁
