#365DaysOfArtPBQChallenge Week 34, Exercises 232-238
Week 34 of the 365 Days Of Art Challenge! I skipped an exercise this week because I'm not sure what it was asking for. Maybe you can help me! Without further ado, here are my 7 for this week… the good, bad, and ugly!
#232 Add colored patterns to the waves. So I didn't use all that much color, I like to actually use these exercises to practice doodling quilting fillers. It's been fun to think quicker on what designs may look good in different spaces.
#233 Calligraphy Practice. So these are supposed to be the letter S. However, I think they look more like 8s. The top 3 rows I used a brush marker and the bottom 3 rows I switched to aquash brushes. I think I like the aquash brushes more than the brush marker because I felt like I had a little bit more control. No idea why since I believe aquash brushes are supposed to be harder to use than brush markers!
#234 Fill the page with pebbles. There were only 2 pebbles that were printed and I added the rest of the pebbles in watercolor. I used colored pencils to decorate the pebbles. I think this set of rocks makes for a good cohesive collection.
#235 Today, try using a black fineliner pen to create different marks. Try different nib sizes for varying thickness of line. I have 3 different fineliner pens, but you can't really see the difference in the lines that each of them draws without looking at them closely. Holding the fineliner at different angles also changes the thickness of the lines as well.
#236 Draw your five favorite fruit. Think about how you position them on the page. Are they in a group, or displayed separately? Are they whole or have they been half eaten? I had intended to try to make a fruit basket layout, but it was rather difficult. A loose grouping of fruit is what I ended up with. Most of my fruit I draw is a whole piece since it's more difficult to draw a half-eaten piece. I think these turned out pretty well, you can at least tell what each piece is supposed to be!
#237 Color in. This exercise I used water color. I tried for a citrus theme with the pineapples and oranges. I did the outsides of the oranges last, and I'm not sure why I picked green. I felt like I needed another color than yellow, orange, or brown. However that makes my oranges very odd... maybe they are very unripe oranges!
#238 Try monoprinting with oil pastels. (This can get messy, so you might like to try on another piece of paper first.) Start by finding a clean sheet of thin paper. Use a colored pastel to cover an area on the sheet of paper with color. Lay this, colored side down, on another sheet of paper, then carefully draw wiht a sharp pencil on the back of the colored paper. See how the colored pastel transfers to the new piece of paper in the areas where you draw. Experiment with this process. Okay, what? So is this just a fancy way of when you write on both sides of a piece of paper with pencil you get graphite on the writing surface when you are on the back of the page? I'm not sure if my colored pencils would work super well with this process. What are oil pastels? Anyone have thoughts on this?

Oil pastels look a bit like crayons, but (at least the ones I have) are square with no pointed end. They have a little bit of tackiness to them, and that is why they would work well for this activity. Basically they are asking you to do a form of print making where you color on one side of the paper with the pastels, place it colored-side down on another paper, and rub. The print should transfer to the other paper. I like your designs in your waves, and your lettering is looking good!
OHHHH!!!! 🤦 I haven’t used those in years! Since middle school art classes. I don’t think I’ve ever owned any. That’s good to know… This exercise does like it’d be fun 🙂
You should be able to find some reasonably priced at an art store (or online).
Yes, I was guessing it was as Wendy suggests, that you are using the second step to transfer color from the first step to your paper. I like your pebbles!
